Looks like no one is officially releasing this yet.

Episode 1

Okay, this was actually a surprisingly good first episode. I had low hopes because of the CGI and that this is yet another music anime around young women. But I actually think the CGI was actually really good in how it was able to subtly show movement, along with how it took liberty using stuff to heighten things like Nina's dark emotional clouds.

At the least, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some sort of meme come from at least this episode, considering the times it had cute anime girls spoiler[flipping the bird]. It is actually a level of edginess that gets my attention, and actually made me burst out laughing the second time. Not really guaranteed, based on the safe moe aesthetic otherwise, but I kind of hope that it will bring similar edge into future episodes.

I love the pigeon rocking out in the cold opening.

Now add music plug jacks to refrigerators and ovens for weird camera views.

Calling the parrot and putting on my eye patch and peg leg - will be watching this to completion after the three episode trial.

This show really, really, really needs to have a second season since there is way to many loose ends to wrap up in one episode.

As for a second season, we only get a cryptic "the story will continue".

It took me a long time to get around to seeing this show because it didn't have a streaming platform when it first came out, and I didn't realize that Crunchyroll had acquired it retroactively. I saw it by accident on the recommended anime column a few weeks ago but then took my time because I'm not a big fan of CGI shows.

Surprisingly, I liked the first episode (the only one I've seen so far) a lot. It reminded me a of a show called Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, which I believe came out at the same time. Jellyfish was an anime that I had a kind of love hate relationship with. The first episodes of both shows had a shy girl become transfixed by the public musical performance (busking) of a more outgoing girl. Both shows are apparently about artistic outsiders trying to get some notice while finding a meaningful way to express themselves.

I liked this show a lot better. I liked the music better, and I liked the character interaction a hell of a lot better. I loved the visual storytelling of Jellyfish, and I didn't dislike the idea of the characters, but one of the things that bothered me about that anime was that the dialogue often seemed too stiff and self-aware - a writer (or maybe translator I guess) trying too hard, and going out of their way to spell out themes and feelings because they didn't trust the viewer to get it. It seemed effortful instead of effortless.

It was a first for me to see a CGI anime where the character interaction seemed organic.

And like I said, the music for Jellyfish was okay, but I was never tempted to go online and try to search for any of the songs. I found the music in this anime much more accessible and I'll check out the closing song forthwith.

Tis the Era of Deranged Anime Band Girls.

I will get the bad news out of the way - the pigeon only makes one appearance. The pigeon is awesome!

Other bad news is no announcement of a second season.

Oh, I rated this Masterpiece.

So I watched episodes 2 and 3 today, and the anime is continuing to surprise me.

Surprise #1 - it's amazing how much of a pain the mostly sweet and vulnerable MC from episode 1 is being, and it's also surprising that I'm still finding her likable and sympathetic anyhow. She seems much more like a real person than most of the waifu wannabes who usually crop up on the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things kind of anime (I'm not a particular fan of the genre, another reason I waited a while to try this show)

Surprise #2 Forget the featured songs (not that they're not pretty good) It's awesome how much the background music is carrying the story along. It was piano in episode 1 and guitar licks in episode 2 and it keeps the pace lively and enhances the mood without seeming too heavy handed or distracting from the dialogue. That's a tough trick to pull off.

It's weird to be reviewing episodes from another season retroactively like this, but I'm really liking this show.

You will find no disagreement on that from Momoka and Subaru.

Now if you end up liking Hina we will have to call in professional help. Wink

While all the Togenashi Togeari girls are cute, this was never intended to be a CGDCT K-ON! equivalent.

Note that the OP sequence contains a moment that is a representation of what the whole series is about.

After nearly getting run over by Momoka driven Truck-kun, Nina makes a confession.

Romantic or platonic? My vote is for the latter.
