I mentioned this in the review thread, but I love the Tiger Mask/Orphanage reference:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Mask_donation_phenomenon They're having a lot of fun with anime history in this series. I'm looking forward to what they do next. Instead of "monster of the week" we get "reference of the week". It will be fun to see how far-ranging they go with the references. This episode tugged out lots of interesting threads. I'm looking forward to how those develop. |

The look Natsuko gave seemed to imply she is well aware that the elf would be revealed a traitor, but presumably didn't think it would be relevant until later. She said that the doppelganger wasn't supposed to happen until much later, so that is probably it.
I am sort of thinking that we are maybe seeing characters break from tropes, such as the unicorn not being used as a sacrificial pawn of drama. Maybe Destiny won't just be the heroine who accidentally creates trouble, thanks to Natsuko telling her to be more active in what she likes. Considering that by her looks she was mostly made to be fanservice, damsel in distress and incompetent troublemaker. So maybe the elf will be able to break away from whatever her thing is. |

And here I thought Ubel Blat was the dark fantasy of Winter 25. I knew this anime had the potential to get grim, but never in my wildest nightmares did I think the MC would unleash a giant anime Idol singer on her enemies...
That said, I'm still loving this isekai. Yep, I'm going to keep emphasizing that it's an isekai every time I post about it. I like the mix of comedy and romance and adventure and apocalyptic setting. I do have one question that I keep coming back to. The first episode was called the First Stroke, and it seemed to be a reference to both the MC's heart attack and to her first use of the magic paintbrush to summon a can of animated whup ass. But I've been kind of wondering ever since...is she going to suddenly revive in some ER unit after she's learned a few lessons about love, ready to create that new anime project? Or is she going to have to repeatedly pull some kind of Flatliner's scenario where she goes back to death's door to return and save the kingdom? About my only complaint about this anime is that every time I see the title, there's an immature part of me that wants to say "Geshundheit!" (And, um...let's not do any pie charts trying to figure out exactly what percentage of me that immature part occupies...) |

I’m wondering if she’s going to return to a world where the film, Tale of Perishing, has all the changes she made to it, and is no longer forgotten, but is now seen as a masterpiece, presaging many developments in the anime world.

Episode 5
Given how the show started, it would have been unrealistic if the MC didn't develop some behavior issues and mindset problems when given OP abilities. Of course, realism is relative in an isekai, so maybe I should say that it would have been inconsistent with her established character. I'm curious about what happens after one of her creations is killed. Given the way she acted like she was going into system shock, I'm kind of wondering if she might appear back in a hospital bed in Japan like dm and I were sort of speculating about, or if the hero will swoop in to demonstrate the power of friendship bonds Red Ranger stye. BTW - anybody else notice how that walking disaster of a princess has been bodybuilding? I think Dusky is right about her taking an alternate character path. |

I noticed it, and were happy about the follow up of Destiny appearing to decide to change her character archetype, becoming super buff. Extra points for the bratty Unio saying he liked her more traditionally feminine look, but she just says that she likes her current self. Also a little curious about the decisions for the Justice character. At least in Japanese they are evidently done by a female VA, but the way they spoke to Natsuko you would think masculine. Kind of makes me think that there is an intention of blurring gender in some regard, whether they a notably pretty man with a feminine voice, a tough woman who likes to flirt with women, or something between. |

Episode 6
Man, this and Red Ranger... what a Sunday one-two punch. I really like the story, characters, humour and look of this one. Lots of creativity on display. As I've said in different ways and in different threads before, I just really appreciate the hell out of it when a show makes an effort to tell a story as opposed to just traipse along, la-la-la-la-la. What a difference in enjoyment it makes. |

What strikes me is how effectively this anime combines children's story elements and more mature themes and emotions...cute kid's anime like unicorns with crippled, alcoholic dragons for just one example. An overall sense of doom and melancholy hanging over a bright fantasy world combined with a meta element...it kind of reminds me of the Neverending Story which I really dig.
Which I guess is my way of agreeing that the story gets past the usual burned out emotional relay switches and comes across as fresh. Really enjoying it. Oh, yeah, and it's an isekai ![]() |

I'm wondering what Unico is going to do when he finds out Natsuko is using his horn as a hair-pin.
Loving Romi Park's Justice, all around. "The people have all been evacuated", except, of course, the abandoned children not at Destiny's orphanage. I'm glad Natsuko is moving forward. I wasn't looking forward to multiple episodes of her not learning her lesson about being a team player. |

Episode 07
Pretty great backstory for Natsuko's rise to virtuoso. And it's doubly ironic that the theme of this episode was to explain her "lacking," when I had just recently decided to randomly browse through my iTunes library of movies, this past week, and watch the scene from (The) Menu (2022) where Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) tells Chef Julian (Ralph Fiennes) that his food is awful because he cooks out of obsession instead of love. She then challenges him to make a cheeseburger, which re-ignites his passion for cooking and eventually leads spoiler[him to letting only her leave the restaurant]. And in this episode, we see Natsuko's obsession with wanting to be able to draw, but lacking the heart to truly infuse her work with any kind of feeling. I'm gonna' call it "the artisan's dilemma" of outputting quantity over quality. Sure, she can draw like some possessed art demon with the utmost precise technical prowess. But artisans (that is to say, creators of any kind of art or craft) can't just be making things like a robot. They have to put their own spin on it and make it theirs, not just make a fancified carbon copy with no soul. After the flashback/dream, she comes to her senses and asks herself if A Tale of Perishing was ever that happy. In experiencing that world, and even changing it, she's starting to find her first love, or at least re-examining that love based on what she originally felt when seeing the movie for the first time. Now, I'm wondering if this whole series is just a dream. And when she wakes up from almost dying (or maybe even having died, then being resuscitated), she'll have a new lease on life and finish that anime she was working on before she died. Heck, on top of finishing that anime with her newfound love, I could even see here doing a remake of Tale of Perishing after all is said and done. That would be a nice little bonus to the ending. |

Is Zenshu an original anime? I'm only asking because I'm wondering if this is going to be a one and done anime ending on the first season.
Earlier in this thread, I was having similar questions about where this is going myself - whether this is going to be some flatliners scenario where she comes to and has to play around with a "legally dead" scenario to go back one last time...whether it's going to be a Land of Oz type ending or a Golden Compass trilogy type ending (if you like Zenshu and you haven't read the Golden Compass trilogy (Technically His Dark Materials) by Philip Pullman, you should, but that's just my opinion. Is there any good ending where she stays in magic land? Oh, I liked the episode too, other than a minute or two where I was heartbroken because I thought the nice girl with glasses was going to become her future anime producer harridan. |

To answer your question, Edjwald, this is an anime-only original which is why this discussion thread has been refreshingly free of source material consumers coming in and making comments like, "zomg, y'all won't BELIEVE what happens next!" or, "zomg, they just TOTALLY bungled that part from the manga." One handy way to know if something is original or adapted is to check out the show's ANN page. If it is adapted from something, the page will note that. Whether the 12 episodes that will make up this season are all we will ever get is impossible to say. If the anime does well it could inspire more.
Tony K., this latest episode made me think that this whole thing is actually a "near death from bad clams" dream. That she will survive, wake up and apply the lessons she's learned in the weird dream to overcome the creative block she's facing. The two main lessons are: 1) finally experiencing what "first love" is, so now she can animate it, and 2) learning you can't do everything yourself, you have to rely on others. Loved getting Natsuko's background and love this show. |

@Blood There are two things that make me wonder about the dream aspect. One is that weird Voice of Doom that keeps coming in out of nowhere saying things like "It's all for naught"
The other is that the anime frequently shows other characters thinking and interacting independently of the MC. Now, granted, the dream could just be going panorama vision, and the strange voice could be the Ego or Id chiming in or whatever, but it's weird. As to not liking to look things up, it's just a kneejerk instinct I've picked up from being burned a few times. Looking up the spelling of a character's name and seeing a little side note that they're a traitor, or being spoken of in the past tense, etc. It's gotten worse since Google started providing helpful sidenotes from a creepy AI ripping off legit site creators without asking me or them. Either that or I'm lazy and like pretending other people are my minions ![]() |

Yeah, I'm not 100% convinced it's all a dream and no doubt a part of my semi-conviction is probably just that I don't want Natsuko to be dead... I want her to go back to Earth and finish her movie. I totally hear ya about being leery of checking info out on the Intrawebs - I've been burnt, too. However, the ANN pages are generally pretty safe, especially the details at the top of the page where the adapted or not 411 would be recorded. However, if you can't get past your spoiler fear, just ask me and I'll let you know, ya big chicken.

I have to say, letting that meta-pigeon go just because she had a human personality was a massive mistake. It seems pretty obvious that she's creating new voids with her own magic pen in order to make sure that her original plot survives, regardless of whether she's surrounded by living, breathing beings speaking lines outside her invention and having quirks she never envisioned.
That's why that red scorpion was using blasto vision similar to our MC's creations, and that's why it burst into paper drafts just like the transforming robot. Not only that, I'm pretty sure the dub actress is the same one who voiced Yubaba in Spirited Away! She must be evil! Anybody here ever seen the movie Stranger Than Fiction with Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Maggie Gylenhall? Just curious. Anyway, it looks like this is turning into an ink slinging duel between two anime artists. |
