The first episode of Magic Maker did not look amazing nor is the premise all that unique, it did however succeed in making me want to see more of it. Most isekai these days have a rushed info dump in the first episode to the point where there is no mystery remaining. Magic Maker in contrast takes the time to set up the family, their bonds and only at the ending of the episode do things start happening. Said happening is also not the mc suddenly turning OP but having a starting point to investigate magic from.
Thus I am curious about how the mc will develop magic and the magic itself feels special instead of just being able to do crazy shit after reading some grimoires. |

Hmm, I sure have mixed feelings on the second episode. The fact that learning to use magic is actually a challenge and not something to be achieved in half an episode feels fresh. The fairy shop at the end also seems to suggest something interesting. On the other hand... those initial 5 or so minutes this week sure were something. The brother/sister segments also remind me a litte of Yosuga no Sora but hopefully I am wrong about that.

It is a bit of a pity that not many have picked up the show since it does surprise in certain ways. Episode 3 had goblins and where in 99% of other shows they are pure fodder that is very much not the case here. In Magic Maker goblins look like they have jumped straight out of a horror and are pretty darn difficult to take down, it had me flash back to Grimgar for abit.
Also a pleasant surprise are actual decent parents who listen to their children and talk things out in a calm manner. |

Five episodes in and due to incrementally accumulating information thanks to a lot of experiments Shion finally has magic that can be considered useful and reliable. Since so many isekai speedrun the process of learning magic I am really enjoying the incremental approach. I also like that the mc is no genius and came to his findings due to many mistakes and help from others.

Seven episode in and while Shion and friends are now strong enough to deal with goblins and the like things have taken an interesting turn. Seems like there is some type of disease caused by a red magic aura hanging in the sky and monster wise new ones are popping up too (given the red eyes likely reated to the aura).

Yeah, I’m definitely hearing Ernie Hudson say, “Tell ’em about the Twinkie, Ray.” |

I think I would have been down for this if they didn't bring up the weird incest angle. The slow build and learning process of magic is very cool, but I don't like the characters, the designs, or just a lot about it.
I haven't commented a lot recently because I just feel like, while giving every show three episodes, I just don't have much to say that's distinctly interesting or compelling about the shows. I kind of hate it that it somewhat feels sooo blobish and such. |

I agree that the weird incest angle should not have been a part of the show, I guess I am just a sucker for magical settings in which the magic is mysterious and special while the monsters are actually scary opponents. I don't want some grimdark setting where humanity is driven near extinction or anything but in most anime the whole magical world thing feels extremely mundane and safe in many ways. It is rare for magic in anime to actually feel magical.

And thus a group was assembled to find a cure for lethargy sickness. I have to say though, Shion can be a bit special in certain ways but all the new characters this week were a tad more special. That includes a hardcore monster fanatic, a battle maniac and a lord who does not want to work. I liked that Shion needed to be convinced to help people and be apart from Marie, it shows that he is not some holy hero mc.

Interesting choice to have the mc kind of fail or at the very least be stuck when it comes to creating a cure for the lethargy sickness. Two years went by and the achieved results are minimal at best. The wraith frenzy at the end will probably result in progress but it is rare to have a mc that fails at something despite being powerful/gifted.
