I see ANN has just picked up on the news about Barbie Hsu's death. For some or most of our younger fans on ANN that aren't familiar with her. She played Shan Cai (the Chinese name for Tsukushi Makino) in the 2001 version of Meteor Garden. The 2001 TV drama is a beloved Taiwanese drama that was broadcasted in most of East and Southeast Asia. The drama although wasn't broadcasted in the US, or Latin/South America or Europe the same way K-drama got it's foundation outside of Asia, it had a big fanbase and popularity in the US at that time by other mean amongst anime/manga fans, and also Asian-American (with the help of Taiwanese Americans communities) in the US and elsewhere. Remember this drama came out before streaming like Netflix, & Crunchyroll existed.
But still RIP Barbie Hsu. Beside Meteor Garden (2001 version), she also played Kim Basinger's character in the HK/Chinese remake of Cellular in the 2008 film, Connected. This was the first time an American film got a Chinese/Cantonese-language remake and started a reverse trend of East Asian countries remaking Hollywood films after 6-8 years of Hollywood remaking Asian films. I know that the 2018 version of Meteor Garden was removed from Netflix in December last year. But I would love it if Netflix can honor Barbie Hsu's life by licensing and streaming the 2001 Taiwanese drama version of Meteor Garden for fans that missed the 2018 version, and also as I said, to honor Barbie's life. |
