Remember, this is all Donald Trump’s fault for starting the TikTok ban back in 2020 and now him taking credit for “fixing” his own problems and to try to get the younger people on his side. AOC did a video explaining how it was rushed, didn’t show any substantial evidence of the app being a threat to national security, etc. They just realized how many people will be pissed in America if TikTok got banned. Really, screw US tech companies for lobbying the US government to have weak or no privacy protection laws. |

And yet, Biden receives credit for signing bipartisan law-one of few time both D and R agree on something. Calling it xenophobia is disingenuous. I have three children and two grandchildren in IT, all refuse to have TT on any device, work or personal. After hearing about backend of TT security, encryption, and data collection and dissemination policy, there was good reason why many IT professionals agreed with Biden policy decision to ban it. Now if Biden could have done something about X and FB too. |

I view it as just desserts. Never mind the potential social influences or data collection concerns, all western social media platforms are inaccessible in China. If it's acceptable for their government to do that, then it's fair game for every international government to do that with Chinese platforms. From a business perspective, that seems very one-sided. The Chinese platforms gain access to western customers, but western business aren't given access to Chinese customers. Hilariously, there's definitely an alternate universe where Musical.ly doesn't get rebranded as Tiktok and instead dies on the ... Vine. Great job, OG Twitter crew. |

Nothing to do with China or security. And no, I am not stupid enough to post who lobbied for the ban and why (do not need to end up on someone's s***list).
I was rather p***ed at Samsung for installing Tik Tok as part of an update on my phone, since I do federal government contracting and FAR 52.204-27 makes having the app installed illegal. |

Trump is literally the reason it got unbanned, as said by TikTok's CEO himself directly. Blame the current admin in congress for banning it. Specifically Mark Warner the head Senate Intelligence Committee who pushed for this so hard and was at the forefront of this. |

I'm thankful TikTok is back. Kudos to President Trump for working out a deal to keep it around. I hope this game can come back too unless this was just an excuse for them to end service and they'll still continue to stay offline. Marvel Snap is back too now from what I'm reading.
I understand not trusting apps with ties to foreign governments but it's already a standard for people in high-security positions to be limitd in what they can have on and do with their phones. I hope no one in a sensitive position uses their phone for recreational content. |

Trump didn't work out a deal. He just said "we're not enforcing the law," (as did Biden) which allowed TikTok to come back with no concessions.
Congressional committee members of both parties unanimously voted to force its sale when shown intelligence as to what TikTok was doing, and after TikTok mobilized its user base to make threatening and suicidal calls to congressional members. TikTok can log keystrokes if you follow a link to another page (e.g. passwords). It can track users on their personal phones (even if official phones don't have it), which can provide information about the people's locations (beyond what they're doing on TikTok). It is obligated under Chinese law to provide this information to the Chinese government on request. It was also shown that it would push or suppress certain viewpoints to increase user exposure to divisive content and decrease exposure to any topics the Chinese government wouldn't want discussed. The effect was so clear TikTok disabled the public-facing tools that could be used to monitor what topics were trending. And the Chinese government considers TikTok too dangerous to allow it to operate in China. So if you want to cheer about TikTok being back, feel free, but there's no need to pretend that the congressional law the president is now ignoring was for no reason. |
