Man thought just because anime can get away with acts towards loli characters, he could do acts IRL.

I know otaku media has a stigma that it is associated with pedophilia and in most cases its not but when high profile people like this are shown as such, it does not help the community at all.

May he rot in prison for all the lives he ruined.

I'm kind of surprised that no Japanese lawyers has gone full Jack Thompson and blame loli and moe anime for this guy and Rurouni Kenshin's creator for engaging in pedophilia the same way that some lawyers try to blame video game for school shooting and mass shooting. I'm glad no US lawyers back in late 2000's tried to blame Tenchi Muyo!, & Love Hina (and probably hentai) for Warren Jeffs' polygamy.

What role does rehabilitation play in cases like this, and is it appropriate to consider suspended sentences for crimes involving the exploitation of minors?

I honestly don't see that happening in Japan because anime is such a big industry, it would be too broad of a brush. That isn't that say that it doesn't happening, just that I doubt that any of those lawyers would give that any oxygen (plus as far as I looked into the Japan legal system, it doesn't reward wild bets much).

Here in North America (namely the US), however.... I will be honest, I am more shocked that it hasn't come up... yet. I hope it doesn't, but hope is something that I have been low in.

Well that doesn't mean one or couple of lawyers in Japan can specifically target that genre in the anime/manga and turn them into scapegoat the same way video game has gotten for mass shooting/violence. I mean video game are popular mainstream but they can still be targeted by politicians and right-wing reactionary in the US. So a Japanese lawyer can pull a Jack Thompson and call for lolis and moe anime to be ban in Japan because of Itou and Watsuki child pornography crimes despite how ubiquitous loli and moe anime/manga are in Japan.

Issac, you also wrote:

Actually, we came a bit close to that. And we've seen book bans in GOP-controlled/red states directly and indirectly targeting manga at public and school libraries like this one, and this one. Also I expressed my fear on the anti-LGBTQ/anti-trans could spread to anime/manga, and I wrote about this back in 2023:

Back in 2023, I wrote:
I don't like to bring up politics especially one involving GOP/conservatives and their attack on anything LGBTQ (if you're not a citizens of the US, or haven't been paying attention in the news lately, there's been a lot of anti-trans, and anti-lgbtq backlash as part of their culture war for the last 2 years), and we've seen something like this being targeted toward anime/manga fandom. Although I'm happy to see yuri and more representation of LGBTQs in anime/manga, I'm worried that they (along with the larger anime/manga fandom) could be targeted by the same anti-LGBTQ lawmakers and bigots in the US that are going after transgender, and drag queens.

I'm also scared that the attack on anti-LGBTQ/anti-trans in the US that could lead to attack on yuri/yaoi/LGBTQ anime/manga (that include the larger anime/manga fandom) which could also lead to anti-Asian attack (because these homophobes and transphobes will figure out that they're from Japan) in the US because of that.

This is what I worried for anime/manga fandom in the US. Also because I'm Asian-American, any attack on anime/manga can lead to attack on the Asian-American communities. But I'm getting a bit off topic here. Why don't I explain more to you via the PM/Private message if you don't mind.
