Pffft, that wimp doesn't have the gumption to be a hamster hunter, let alone try to bag big game cougars.

I've only managed to watch the first two episodes, and it is competing with Apothecary, but yeah- I think this one's a keeper. If you give me engaging characters/dynamics then I'm probably sold on a show (It's why I adored In/Spectre despite its issues,) and I have a definite weakness for "brilliant gremlin" characters. So Takao alone is enough to sell me.

Seems like the next episode (episode 4) will release on January 22. I am reading conflicting news if that is a delay or if it was always the schedule so make of it what you will.

Eh, that's a drag. Of course the first delay of 2025 affects an anime I'm really enjoying as opposed to one I couldn't even bother sampling.

Good to see the show back and hopefully there will not be any further delays. Anyway, episode 4 was interesting in that it felt like an easy to solve case up until the fiery ending. A group of people enter a cave/tomb that has been closed off for many years so it makes sense that there might be substances inside not beneficial to their health. It makes so much sense in fact that I am surprised that going to your doctor/hospital and mentioning where you have been would not set off red flags. I suppose the group was trying to keep it secret.

Maybe there was some other substance in the cave since mold does not normally risk you getting lit up.

I'm thinking the spontaneous combustion was probably somehow engineered by that n'er-do-well descendant who was practically giving the Dr. Evil pinky sign after he got knocked down by Yu.

I'm enjoying the show in much the same way that I used to enjoy a little show called Cold Case, but not as much as I used to enjoy a show called The Mentalist which was more successfully driven by an eccentric main character, which this show also has more potential to be in my opinion, and a central mystery, which this show could use...um, also in my opinion.

Which is my way of saying, I wish we were getting a little more Ameku time and less moving the plot briskly along from point A to point B to solve the mystery before the closing song time. She's a great character, ripe for being utilized more creatively instead of in the same basic ways.episode to episode.

Anyway, like I said, I'm enjoying the show because I like a competent mystery, but I have reluctantly gotten out my clipboard and removed my sharpie pen from its pocket protector and downgraded this anime from "Great" to "Good," If it sounds like I'm complaining, it's only because I had such blazingly high hopes for it on episode one. Now I have warm hopes for it, but that's not to be confused with luke warm hopes.

Or if that first episode was just a one in million aberration, I guess they'd be fluke-warm hopes...

(Trying, in my own small way, to bring awareness to the undiagnosed punning disorder that millions suffer from...)

I agree. Some longer arcs that give time for Takao to slowly investigate, have a bit of fun and shine like the mad doctor that she is would help a lot. Particularly in the one episode cases do they only have time to go from one scene to the next in order to reach the end in time. Every single moment is necessary to get the case closed, there is no fat so to speak.
Some central storyline to pop up every now and then with maybe a suitable opponent/danger would also be welcome.

If the season ends with mostly one episode cases such as there have been until now then it would feel like wasted potential.

Episode 4

Ahhhhhhhh, that's the stuff! So happy to have my obnoxious Ameku back, long may she reign over her inferiors. Unlike some of you, I don't particularly care whether the mysteries are compelling or not, fairly solvable or not... as long as they are weird and lurid (like me), that's fine. What I'm really here for is to watch Ameku order around her personal little Stepit Fetchit who is also her muscle when the situation demands it. I wouldn't have minded if he had broken a few of that dude's ribs or crushed his nasal cartilage. Imagine having the temerity to push my sweet l'il Ameku to the ground! Almost makes me want to support capital punishment. Anyway, very happy to have this back.

I am not super knowledgeable about medical stuff, so whether I have seen it on some other medical mystery show, I kind of picked it up straight away that it was a fungal infection. All I needed was damp tomb and breathing problems and I said fungus. And I do think that I must have seen it on another medical show, because when they said he had been getting worse under treatment of antibiotics I was certain that I recalled that antibiotics can make fungal infections worse. I was actually baffled that they were not wearing mask when running tests in the tomb.

I did have a couple theories for the combustion. At the start I thought the oxygen tank could have something to do with it, but not really sure if it plays in part later. I am suspecting some element of along the lines of hypnotism by the angry guy. It was my main suspicion that the guy who locked himself away was somehow having subliminal messages fed to him, which was why he was repeating the whole curse thing so much. Maybe as an heir he found some sort of family secret of onmyouji to be able to drug people and make them susceptible to suggestion along with other tricks to make curses look real.

I've been watching the first 3 episodes, the first 2 episodes has that House M.D vibe coming out of Dr. Ameku.

I don't think that the oxygen tank plays a part since it was mentioned before then that the professor no longer needed supplemental oxygen for his condition, so it was probably already gone by then. I don't think that the assistant was hallucinating that they were on fire as you saw the flames from the outside of the building that she was in, suggesting that she really was on fire. I'm suspecting that since she was shown to be a smoker, that a cigarette is the most likely cause.

I dunno, Potential spoiler theory --> spoiler[turning the office room of a smoker into an oxygen tent is certainly one workable theory,] and it wouldn't take a rocket scientist. Lots of duct tape though.

I could see it go either way which makes it interesting for me. It could be a medical condition combined with an environmental factor such as smoking/cigarettes but that chuckling creep might be the cause too since he did not seem to be all there.

Or maybe both at the same time? I really enjoyed the fifth episode since it is of the same quality as the first two. That goes for the amazing animation but also the show being significantly better writing wise when there is no rush to reach the conclusion in one episode.

This week mr chest rash scratcher was caught (rip RX-8) due to the warrior duo but given the ending it is hard to be certain who or what is causing the combustion. It is easy to point at the chest rash scratcher but it begs the how question (though given all the smoking and matches on display it likely has something to do with that).

He had a grandmother <--I think or at least an older relative who gave people permission to search the tomb the first time, and she was implied to be the more reasonable of the two. But maybe the bad apple didn't fall far from the fruit basket.
