Well I thought this was going to be a comedy. And most of the episode is just sad. The main character just getting emotional abused this is not what I signed up for. Though once the prince showed up with the purple haired girl, the comedy finally started.
The way I describe this series, it is Cinderella if Prince Charming and his family were the abusers instead of the step family. Though speaking of, though one can not sell short that there is an actual Cinderella influence here. There are these two background characters, they could be references to the step sisters. |

@Zfunk Yah, last season I think two of my favorite shows Negative Positive Angler and Mushroom Pup (Oinokino? Oingoboingo? Oni-Kinua?) both started out with some pretty heavy openings that lasted most of the first episode, and I think they both lost a lot of viewers because of that. As a matter of fact, there were lingering traces of sadness for several episodes after that now that I think about it. Anyway, it was a shame because both anime turned out to be life affirming and well made IMHO.
I don't know if this anime is my cup of tea or not - it's been a long time since I wished for the superpower to jump into a television screen and start slapping animated characters quite this strongly - but I liked the last 7 or so minutes, and I'm willing to give it some time to breathe. |

The first episode is indeed a pretty hefty downer for most of it. I expect that things will turn around for the better in future episodes though and give the mc time to heal and actually live. In that regard it is indeed very much like Angler and Kinoko Inu, those started off very negative and a large part of their seasons was the slow process of healing.
I would like to say that Princess Lessons will be the same but I am not a big fan of nobles/politics and all that jazz theme wise. So I will probably keep an eye on this one and maybe pick it up at the end of the season. |

Its an interested case of boiler style story telling. Building up tons of pressure to result in a payoff as all the steam gets let out. It is proper cathartic to allow our protagonist to be herself and thumb it all to society at large. Like I am really glad for the character to escape a life of misery. I just wish that the intro, outro and every character in the show wasnt promising to rain on the parade of the escape out of a pitiful life.
Unfortunately the discourse around the show has already spoiled something for me. That spoiler[the escape to the country side is short lived. This makes me wonder if this is a show about a strong female character getting her breakaway from the rules? Or is this actually about a possessive love interest being all attractive in how forceful he is, with the title being a deceptive mini storyline.] |

Nope, add your spoiler there to episode one and you have the entire plot of the first volume of the novel version. The rest is all mini variations on the same theme. The whole volume has as much substance as cotton candy. spoiler[The author has taken a modern tomboy type and inserted her into a Regency Romance, or perhaps a Jane Austen novel.] |

Episode 2, this is night and day from episode 1, which was just sad and painful to watch all this abuse. But now we got the comedy we were promised.
When the main heroine breaks the 4th wall, there this is goofy music anyone notice that, and I have heard that music before countless times in anime. I said last week that those two background characters might be a nod to CInderella and they are based on the step sisters, but giving what happens in episode 2 I think it is more than that. First of all they are not background characters, they are full on characters that have names and stuff. And based on other stuff we see here, I have this crack theory, it may never be revealed because it is not important to the story. My crack theory based on the evidence from this episode. I think the queen of this kingdom, the mother of the prince of this series is in fact Cinderella, and those two women I mentioned are her step sisters. Think about it, it is kind of obvious that the prince can understand and talk to animals, that was a trait of Cinderella, so must have inherited it So this series is technically this is a secret Cinderella: The Next Generation story, at least in my head canon. Though wouldn't be ironic or sad if want to look at it that way, that Cinderella one of the most famous victims of abuse fairy tale characters ever is indirectly and unintentionally because I don't think they mean any harm, is responsible for this abuse with these princess lessons. @zfunk - It's an interesting theory, and I did notice that the prince had a way with animals, but I thought it was just to show that he was a kind soul despite the hellish princess tutorial that his love interests have to go through. I have to say though, grudge bearing soul that I am, I prefer the original version of the story where the stepsisters had their eyes pecked out by attacking birds.
On that note, I wouldn't mind some Grimm fates falling on the brother, the royal tutor, Lily, and the parents either. Nothing too drastic. A pool full of piranha here. Some really brutal pirate raiders there. Maybe a colony of killer ants or two. Seriously, I expect this is the kind of anime that will eventually go sweet and light and have these people show better sides or have epiphanies or whatever, but I find them as despicable as some of the out and out villains you find in anime who are almost caricatures of bullying and violence and selfish hypocrisy. That said, I enjoyed the second episode - couldn't you tell |

The royal tutor is the real villain of the series, I hope she gets fired by the end of this.
What is wrong with Lily? she is okay. |

It was Lily who called the parents in for reinforcements. J'accuse!

Lily doesn't know any better, let her be. She has mostly been an ally.
Anyway let's say the queen is Cinderella, she probably have to go though princess lessons as well, but to her consider what she went through before hand, that was probably heaven to her, so she wouldn't know how those lessons are for others. As for the parents, I am more tolerant of them and willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, because I have seen truly awful people in the grand parents from I Getting Married To The Girl I Hate In My Class, now those are truly awful selfish guardians, and it is on purpose they know what they are doing. Here there is still deniable that maybe they have their daughter be interest at hand. So I am more willing to forgive. |

Zfunk, Zfunk, Zfunk, that's my whole point about Lily. Getting backstabbed by the one person you viewed as your steadfast ally is even worse than having your happiness disregarded by the brother who's been a rat turd all along. But fine, in the doubtful event that I ever do have the power to pressure the writer of this anime to visit Grimm brothers style karma on all the people who view the MC's happiness as something to be discarded for political purposes, I'll give Lily a break

I will say that as off the second episode that despite all the cuteness of the prince, he has a steep cliff to climb to deserve her interest. The bit about him trying to make her jealous looks particularly inexcusable, that he rather play a game to manipulate her rather than maybe try and understand why she wasn't particularly passionate. She was essentially abused and kept quiet about it to do what was expected, and a girl who looks like tried to take the place couldn't handle it herself.
I would only hope that if she does go back, that maybe no one knew the extent that she was being abused into a puppet of a person. Let the girl have some fun and freedom in her life. |

It wants to funny about some pretty dark themes about forced marriage, ruining a females life over decorum and depriving someone of any liberty in their life. I like her when she is free, she is an amazing character away from her shackles. Why then does the show want me to enjoy a creep taking away the good part of the show.
It feels so wrong, and wants to be happy about it. You normally take this kind of tone for a silly person refusing to do something needed and helpful to their lives, like an oktaku neet being made to bath and attend some social gathering. Not this destroy a brilliant life stuff. I imagine it will work mostly for young teens who think "Why is she ignoring the hunky lord with all the power?". Or just wrongful romance type readers. |

Well episode 3, this series is for sure influenced by fairy tales and making fun of them in a fun way, this episode is the Beauty and the Beast episode, the plot of this episode mostly is that.
Well if each episode is going to reference a particular fairy tale, I wondering if we are going to get a Little Red Riding Hood episode giving our main character's hair color. |
