It did see a lot of mention at last year's, and the only other anime that was mentioned both last year and this was Apothecary Diaries. Personally I feel like Frieren's episodes released in 2023 were much better than the ones in 2024 while Apothecary Diaries is the opposite, with the 2024 episodes starting to coalesce much more than the initial more-episodic-like ones, so in that sense I can understand it

I had kind've just assumed most of the folks setting up the ranking considered Frieren a 2023 or earlier title, despite some episodes airing in 2024? Would also be surprised it didn't even crack top 10 if its latter half (despite being a bit weaker than the first) was considered for this, though.

Gotta agree there. The slice of life episodes of Frieren far more quite than their Hunter x Hunter arc. There was action too in the early episodes but they didn't exploit it that much.

Anime: Oshi no Ko
Song: Fatal
Movie: Kengan (literally the only one I watched)
Game: Fate/Stay Night Remastered
Moment: Akane comforting Aqua (should've been Aqua sobbing on stage but DK fumbled)
Character: Akane Kurokawa
LN: Danmachi 19, assuming 18 didn't come out this year
Manga: You Can't Lie to the Saintess (new), Make the Exorcist Fall in Love (continuing)
Worst: I Parry Everything

This is the year where the shows I had high expectations for disappointingly ended up falling flat in their faces. But there has been shows where the opposite happened which is a plus!

For the shows that surprised me, Gushing Over Magical Girls will always be a guilty pleasure for the right and wrong reasons though I do appreciate that the show understands idea of magical girls regardless of BDSM yuri or not. Girls Band Cry is definitely my surprise favorite for 2024 just for how awesome Nina is as a character, her relationship with Momoka, and just how it's not afraid to have some grit to it. I'm still shocked Toei produced this gem though the distribution of this show is baffling. And we got another solid P.A. Works original gem that is Mayonaka Punch where we have vampires becoming Youtubers and the hilarity that ensues from that.

And speaking of P.A. Works originals, that brings me to Narenare - Cheer for You where I had high expectations because 1.) girls cheerleading and 2.) the staff of MyGO where involved, and it is all for naught! The show's focus is a mess, and each of the girl's big character development moment felt squandered. And there's Studio BONES 25th Anniversary project Metallic Rouge which really disappointed me because it has the elements I wanted which is a hot female lead in a toku-like power armor in a partnered with another hot female that takes place in cyberpunk setting. The rapport between the two female leads is easily the biggest boon for this show which makes it frustrating why the show hasn't capitalize on that a lot more.

Interestingly different format. Since there's normally at least a couple of top ranking lists that are strikingly different, I'm curious about how this ordering was decided on.

Its lack of presence on this list would have surprised me if it hadn't been largely overlooked in the Best of Fall 2024 feature. I am a bit surprised that neither s2 of Oshi no Ko nor the second half of Frieren (weaker, but still strong enough to make the Top 10) appeared. No real surprises on what did get included, though; half of this list overlaps with my own (but in a distinctly different order), while the other half are all titles that I suspected might be here.

Please to see that my pick for Best Character (Nina) was matched more than once, and two of my top three picks for Best Scene (from Orb and DanMachi) are also present, although I do also have to agree with Steve Jones' pick from Gushing Over Magical Girls; that was, indeed, a pivotal, transformative scene both for the series and for the "dark magical girl" subgenre as a whole. The Best Songs list is glaringly missing the second version of "Anytime Anywhere" used for the Frieren episodes aired in 2024; I loved the way its visuals told a story beyond what was in the series.

As for Worst Anime? Always a controversial category, but Failure Frame would definitely be in my bottom 5 for the year qualitatively speaking, while Unnamed Memory would be my pick for poorest adaptation and Metallic Rouge for biggest disappointment. No proper Worst of Year list would be complete without including the disaster that is The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases, though. I can only think that it didn't make this list because none of the staff bothered to watch it out.

Best show: The Dangers in My Heart S2. Yes, the ending is predictable but the journey to get there was great. Ichikawa's slow development as a person and his introduction to the world around him was executed perfectly. I cried so hard. It's not my fault, I'm Latino.

Best song: Fatal by GEMN. I honestly think this song was not given the love it deserved. It's not YOASOBI from season one but this was a banger and had me bopping along everytime watched a new episode.

Best character: Maomao. I've oddly identified with her but not with her knowledge of plants, herbs and the fun of poisoning oneself. But her mindset of "Head down, do my job, and help when needed.... oh crap I'm getting noticed." Plus she's a strong female character in a male dominated world. She pushes on and fights to figure out a mystery, whether she wants to be involved or not.

Best moment: Hestia throws down. Her finally showing her power at such a large scale made me happy but also slightly terrified. Anything for Bell-kun.

Looking back on my ratings for everything I watched this year, there were a lot of 8/10s, some 7s and 6s, and perhaps more notable disappointments than most years, too. There was only one show I watched this year that I really felt compelled to give a 9/10 though: Mayonaka Punch. It came in with zero hype and took a few weeks to hit its stride, but once it did, it really was a step up from anything else I caught this year.

And might I say, good on PA Works. They've been around a long time by now and have always been really solid, but MayoPan was their best production to date imo, and it has me feeling optimistic about whatever their next original work may be.

My favourite anime this year was The Dangers in My Heart season 2. It's now my favourite anime romcom ever. It's funny, incredibly wholesome and just has a very well-executed romantic journey.

My other favourite anime this year were: Oshi no Ko S2, Mushoku Tensei S2 Part 2, Girls Band Cry and Delicous in Dungeon. I only voted for 5 anime, thinking of 10 would have been too much work.

Re:Zero's season 3 was perhaps my most anticipated anime this year, I haven't seen it yet however as it's still ongoing so I can't vote for it.

I don't think I'm bothered to think what my worst anime this year was. Don't think I watched any real stinkers this year.

As for my favourite anisongs, there are many that I really liked. Classroom of the Elite S3's opening was great though I liked the season 2's better. Girls Band Cry also had a great opening theme. Oshi no Ko S2's ending theme is dark and kinda anxiety inducing, quite nice.

I really liked Delicous in Dungeon's 2nd ending. I dunno, it gives a bit of a feeling of the calm before the storm. A feeling of our characters being happily together but giving a mild hint of melancholy or imminent hardships. I DUNNO. I can't fully explain the feeling the ending theme gives me. It sounded nice to my ear.

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable had a very catchy and fun opening theme. Just gave some really positive and energetic vibes.

Said this in another thread, but while there were still a variety of solid series in 2024, this was ultimately a bit of a weaker year compared to the last few. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some gems worth celebrating!

Best Series: Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction - Even with some minor flaws with fully wrapping the story up, this was easily the standout of the year. Mainly I really just adored Kadode and Ouran’s delightfully weird friendship facing the fantastical and even unsettlingly mundane trials of their new everyday life approaching the end of the world. Really surprised me as well since I haven’t had the best track record connecting with this author’s works before - maybe this is a sign to give some of them another shot. (HM: Kimi ni Todoke S3)

Best Film: Look Back - I feel like the paragraphs and paragraphs in the article praising Look Back are enough. So much hits so hard in this film, but its celebration of art -- the effort poured into it & the struggles, joys, and vital relationships that follow creating it -- makes it a must-watch for anyone passionate about the arts. Esp in the industry's current tumultuous environment. The last 15 minutes have stayed with me since first seeing it in October. Amazingly delivered and orchestrated message. (HM: The Concierge)

Best Character: Ayane (Kimi ni Todoke) - Female characters really took center stage this year - from MaoMao in Apothecary Diaries, Kumiko in Sound Euphonium, half the cast from Dead Dead Demons or Yatagarasu, and even some returning fan favorites like Holo in Spice & Wolf or Akane in Ranma 1/2… Kimi ni Todoke's new hour-long formatting almost made some episodes feel like full character studies which was such a pleasant surprise! I thought Ayane was given so much more interiority and it makes me sad just how under the radar this show fell despite its known name. (HMs: See all of the above)

Best Song: Water Carrier (Kroi) - I put Uni-Verse from Gridman Universe down last year since I was able to see it on a flight (and it’s so damn good I brought it up again), but I’m going to say the Sand Land OP - it was just a blast to listen to. (HM: Uni-verse off a technicality)

Best Opening: UUUUS!! (One Piece OP 26) - I watched this OP probably an unhealthy number of times. There's almost an overwhelming amount of things to love about it and it's the best of the year by a country mile. (HM: Otozure - Kimi wa Meido-sama OP)

Best Anime Moment/Episode: One Piece Fan Letter. Infuses the same outstanding kinetic spectacle found in the show’s 26th OP with the biggest beating heart. Seeing a new benchmark like THIS for such a long-running franchise is so damn exciting. (HMs: MHA 17, Dead Dead Demons 16, Dandadan 7, other One Piece eps…)

Best Not-so-New Manga: The Summer Hikaru Died - A bit late here, but while I found a few interesting or fun “new” manga this year (aka just reading them for the first time now lol), this was easily the most arresting. Calling it visceral and raw is almost low-hanging fruit given the premise but man nothing hits like atmospheric sleepy town psychological horror when done right. (HMs: How I Met My Soulmate, I See Your Face Turned Away)

Best Dub: Frieren - Bit of a mixed year for dubs personally, partially because my sub to dub viewing ratio skewed much more towards the former (I know some director out there is ready to tackle Yatagarasu, Tonari no Yokai-san, or Train to the End of the World, right?? haha). Most of the ones I enjoyed were just sequels/reboots/continuations like MHA S7 or Spice & Wolf. Frieren, Delicious in Dungeon, & Dandadan seem to be the top three this year, but the former’s popularity is more noteworthy for not having the added boost of having a same day dub with people who normally don’t watch that many dubs actually giving them a chance for once due to sheer convenience.

Worst Anime: What happened with Uzumaki just hurts…

My power rankings for the year:

1. Delicious in Dungeon (10 of 24 watched, SASUGA TRIGGER)
2. Gushing Over Magical Girls
3. Trillion Game (wins the Snake 'n' Bacon Award for show I really liked that many didn't)
4. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II
5. A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics
6. MF Ghost Season 2
7. Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night
8. SHY Season 2
9. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!
10. Uzumaki (the first episode easily carries this one)
11. Astro Note
12. Mayonaka Punch (rightfully deserves higher, but nonetheless the roughest viewing experience I had this year)
13. Ninja Kamui
14. Plus-Sized Elf

If I watched more than the one episode so far, Kimi ni Todoke Season 3 would be top 3, easily. If I watched more than three episodes so far, Kengan Ashura Season 2.5 would be high to mid-rank. If I watched it at all, safe to say DANDADAN would've cleared the board. But alas, it is what it is, and I hope they aren't too salty for you.

4. Yakuza Fiance
5. The Apothecary Diaries
6. Delicious in Dungeon

Honorable Mentions: Nina the Starry Bride, Doctor Elise and Villainess Level 99

Worst for the WTF, but also fascinating because of the WTF - Bye Bye Earth and Train to the End of the World

Worst that I couldn't get past 5 minutes of - My Deer Friend Nokotan

Favorite Opening - Depending on my mood, either Another Birthday from 7th Time Loop, Sleep Walking Orchestra from Delicious in Dungeon, or Ambivalent from Apothecary Diaries
Closing - Between Kienai from 7th Time Loop, Nani Warotonne from Yakuza Fiancee or Itsumo Futari ga Iine from Magical Girl and Evil Lieutenant

Character - Rishe from 7th Time Loop, Maomao as a runner up

Game - Unicorn Overlord, nothing else is even close though I haven't gotten my hands on the new Ys yet

Manga - I haven't really read any manga, but have read a TON of manwha over on Tapas. I'd say my favorites I read this year (though honestly hard to narrow down...I could list at least 6 more here) were Marriage of Convenience, Reverse the Crazy Curse, Villains are Destined to Die, The Lost Stiletto Affair, Kill the Villainess, I Shall Master this Family, The Hero's Savior, and How to Win My Husband Over.

Movies - Only saw two - Spy X Family and Lord of the Rings. Loved both.
