I have to give praise for how varied and interesting the cases were. A lot of detective shows fall into a predictable routine in setting up cases and how they are solved. In the case of Diaries the nature of the cases and how they are introduced stays fresh, as does the fact that they do not all end the same way. In some cases the truth was figured out and yet there was no big reveal, it was simply left to run its course (I will never forget episode 3, that struck a cord).

Otherwise compliments for the presentation and all characters being at least somewhat memorable. I also ended up not hating a single character, even the baddies were more than simple baddies.

Wow, Fall 2023 was a bumper crop for 2-cours shows:

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End which I rated a Masterpiece
Apothecary Diaries which I will rate Excellent
Undead Unluck which I rated Very Good
Shangri-La Frontier which I will rate Good.

Maomao is awesome and I love her double act with Jinshi. I just may have to start collecting the hardcover LNs as they come out.

Don't just collect them, read them. Wink They are like the episodes of the anime, you get to the end faster than seems possible.

Ah, you know me all too well, Alan45. But yes, if I do start collecting them I will actually read them, too!

...

Eventually. Wink

Probably my most anticipated title of the season. Maomao, I have missed you! On a total whim, I went to Amazon Canada and bought the first volume of the LN... on Kindle, no less. I may be finally joining the Kindle revolution. When I saw the difference in price between hard copy and Kindle, plus the fact that I'd be getting the digital version instantly... it just made sense. Read the first two pages and already came across this gem:

"In her time as an apothecary, Maomao had come to believe there was no toxin so terrifying as a woman's smile." Laughing Oh yeah, I'm gonna enjoy this.

Blood, it was the Chinese and Korean web novels that you can't find anywhere but online that broke my Kindle resistance.

Well, that and the adjustable print and that I haven't gotten Lasik surgery yet but don't have prescription glasses either.

And the fact that publishing companies have all but stopped making the 7.99 mass market paperbacks for fantasy and science fiction, having fallen into that trap where people with a dwindling consumer base try to compensate by raising prices, which adds to the dwindling consumer base.

But I got a big stack of hardcovers this Christmas, and I'm reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold right now. And yes, that was half a joke gift because my love of coffee is quite real, but it's also a pretty cool book.

Oh, wait, this is an anime thread isn't it?

Yeah, I'm seriously looking forward to this series as well. This, Solo Leveling (fingers crossed) and Shangri-La Frontier all in the same season is a pretty happy thing.

@Edjwald

In addition to the reduced price, you don't have to find storage for E-books. Also a lot of stuff is read once and done. You are not left with something too good to throw away and a problem to keep.

Coffee? You drink that stuff?? {Shudder} It smell good but tastes awful. I've had one cup of that in my entire life, (long story).

Oh please, everybody knows that coffee is like beer. It tastes horrible until you get addicte(koff) used to it, and then it's one of the best things ever. I never drank enough beer to acclimate, so I layered all that potential addic(Koff) fascination on coffee two fold. Alan45 just gave up before the coffee got good. No biggy. :::Hyperventilates in Dunkin Donuts special blend coffee bag:::::

And Alan45, I agree on your points about E-readers and do in fact rely mostly on my Kindle for new material, but there are some downsides too.

For example, I love to read while taking a hot bath. I also like long walks on the beach, hot fudge sundaes, and Jaz...oh wait.

And yeah, my books took up a lot of space in the U-haul last time I moved, but when I pick up one of my favorite books and look at the cover and smell that book smell when I flip through the pages, I have a pretty strong memory of how much I enjoyed the book and maybe want to read it again. I don't have that experience looking at the cover art on a Kindle.

I own my paperbacks. The stuff on my Kindle could be legally taken away if Amazon stopped paying the publishing company for licensing rights. Of course that could never happen. It's just that it could.

And when that big storm hit this fall and I lost power for four days, everybody I know was inconvenienced, but I cooked on the top of my kerosene heater and read paperbacks by candlelight.

Paperbacks are harder to access by pirate sites which makes the publishing companies lose money which ultimately hampers their ability to produce more books. Of course, a determined crook could scan a paperback page by page and still make an illegal ebook, but glorified bots couldn't do it in seconds.

And no, I am not at all being contrary because Alan45 dissed coffee Wink

Jeez, Blood, you skipped anxiety, restlessness, irritability, depression, insomnia, paranoia, and went straight to impulsivity and self-destructive behavior. You've got to pace yourself my dude.

Here's an easy self-diagnostic test: If you were stuck in an elevator with several other people, how many hours would it take before you started speculating about which fellow passenger to turn on and eat when you were all forced to turn cannibal?

If the answer is anything less than 16 hours, you should start meditating and taking yoga classes. Just saying.

@Edjwald

I think I mislead you. I am a devoted book collector. You won't get any argument about the pleasure of holding a well made book and reading it. However: I have had to purge my collection regularly as it reached the limits of my shelving. Then I got into manga. Cool I quickly had to start storing what I couldn't shelve in those boxes paper comes in. I've got almost a hundred of those full on heavy duty shelving in storage. Some of them may never see the light of day again. Then came light novels. I already have a couple hundred volumes of those and have had to put some in storage.

Then along came The Apothecary Diaries, the light novels were only available in digital format. The manga version caught my attention and I bought a Kindle in order to read them. Digital is a perfect solution for those light novels that turn out to be less than stellar. It is also a help with those non fiction books that are in a type face too small to read at my age. The Kindle reading space is still a bit small to use for manga though. Oh, and the Kindle model I bought was advertised as being sufficiently water resistant to be able to read in the bath. I take showers though so that is not of much use.

Concerning coffee, when I was young my mother wouldn't let us kids have coffee on the grounds we didn't need caffeine. I tasted the stuff and didn't argue with her as it tasted awful. In high school I got into tea and caffeinated soft drinks and never did start coffee. In the Navy as a junior office I horrified a number of old salts by asking the bridge messenger to bring me tea. The Navy runs on coffee. While in the Navy, when we had liberty in Barcelona Spain I did drink a single cup but I was well lubricated at the time and don't remember the taste.

There is an old joke about a man eating black olives. His six year old son in imitation is taking olives out of the jar, biting in to them and crying. His father asked "what's wrong" The kid replies "daddy, you are getting all the good ones". That is how I feel when I hear people going into rhapsodies about the taste of various coffees or beers.

@Alan45

Yeah, I never went down the manga rabbit hole. I have this feeling that if I even try one manga, I'll wind up freezing and starving in some back alley, in a crude thrown together shelter whose walls are made of stacked up manga that I can no longer afford, unwilling to light any of those pages on fire for warmth.

And I can see where people practically gloating about their coffee enjoyment could be perplexing or annoying. I feel the same way when I hear people talking about how good 100 Girlfriends is.

(Definitely not taking a long, slow sip of Green Mountain Breakfast blend coffee and sighing contentedly)

I won't delete this post...I don't want Blood's follow-up to make even less sense than usual Wink but I accidentally reposted, so I'm taking out the duplication.
