Femio is the greatest one shot character in history.
I consider the ending, including Ahiru's fate, to be perfect though explaining why more than saying "because of what Drosselmeyer was to the story and what motivated him" would be spoilers. Yes, spoilers for a show that is pushing a quarter century old but since the author of this piece didn't give any, I guess I cannot.
Thinking about this show makes me a bit nostalgic for when:
1. a lot more high profile shojo anime was being made
2. shows regularly had 24-50 episodes
3. there were a lot more absolutely bonkers off the wall shows like this, and this show wasn't even Satoshi Kon/Mamoru Oshii surrealism or a parody

Finally, for a magical girl show, it had A LOT of stuff that should have interested boys. A shame that it wasn't a bigger hit because if it had been, more multi-demo magical girl show imitators (no, the grown men who watch Pretty Cure and Prisma Illya don't count) would have followed. Lots of the big shonen shows have girls in the same age group as a major demo. Naruto cultivated this by design, for example. Would have been great if Princess Tutu done the same for shojo.

There are some baseline similarities for my favorite anime series, Sailor Moon, with Ahiru and Usagi both floundering academically and lacking confidence only to be thrust into the spotlight as a girl with a heavy destiny (they're also both named after animals).

Though I'm also fond of Freya, played by a young Mamiko Noto, whose biggest role at the time had been Rin in Inuyasha. Might partly be spillover from her episode also being Uzura's debut episode.

I still remember the shock, on first viewing, when spoiler[one’s view of Fakir did a 180 from villain to hero].

The change in tone that came with the transition from first season to second season was also striking.

I'm a big fan of Ikuko Itoh's artwork and having met her, Tutu is her favorite series that she has worked on. It has a lot of gorgeous animation and is basically like watching elements of all the Sailor Moon episodes she worked on but in an entirely different series.

I hate the ending. The bittersweet aspect doesn't bother me, but Mythos's reasoning for choosing the partner that he did didn't sit well for me. The whole "she was willing to suffer more, so that means she loves me" reasoning just reeks of toxicity and ruined some characters for me.

That being said, I would love for a continuation of Ahiru and Fakir's story, even if it's just an episode or two.

It's been a while since I've seen this, but I remember enjoying it quite a bit, especially the use of classical music, which I loved Smile

The last set of episodes meaders a bit as we watch Fakir not write

Is this a typo of "meanders"?

Ooh, an Anime Backlog entry for my favorite magical girl series?? Sign me up!

I'm quite glad that Lynzee was able to walk away from Princess Tutu with an overall good time.
Bringing up Ikuhara and Utena is quite interesting as a comparative point, and not one I would think to make. While both works include meta-commentary at play, I'd argue that Tutu plays with that element at a more kid-friendly level, while simultaneously playing out more like a traditional magical girl show (it's predecessors by Sato & co.), and has the hallmarks that I come to find in that realm.

- A loveable cast that is the heart of the show.
- A focus on the interpersonal relationships between the core cast (+romance heehee)
- Lovingly crafted visuals that emphasize the beauty in the magic (in this case, ballet dancing & sequences!)

In contrast, I think Utena is much more centric around the metaphors and messaging that Ikuhara wanted to portray. TLDR I love both, but I wouldn't think to walk into PT expecting Utena-level metaphoric narrative. But, I also watched Tutu at a very young age and only appreciated the meta-aspect more as an adult and on rewatches.

I grew to really love and sympathize with Rue and Duck, but I can't say the same for either of the male leads in particular. This is likely due to Mythos spending a good chunk of the series as a cipher, which is entirely understandable given the plot at the time but it did make it more difficult to connect with him as a baseline before his personality becomes conflicted yet again.

You noted your issue with Mythos (which is understandable) but why did you dislike Fakir? My recollection is that he had a pretty dramatic character arc and a couple surprising twists toward the end.

God, I adore Princess Tutu. I actually really love Fakir's arc and the ending as a whole (completely get the criticism on Mytho though). One of my favorites in terms of "bittersweet finales."

I also remember when I was a part-time nanny, I showed it to the two girls I was watching that summer who were pretty much the perfect age for it, and they got SO into it despite it being from 2002 haha

If you'd told me circa two decades ago that I'd not only willingly watch a show about ballet dancers called "Princess Tutu," but that I'd consider it an absolute masterpiece, I'd have laughed in your face. It's an incredible journey full of fantastic characters, and all set to a beautiful classical music soundtrack. That climactic Swan Lake pas de deux scene at the midpoint is going to live in my head forever. What stands out the most to me is that the series starts out as a fairly straight version of a fairytale, then deconstructs the idea of fairytales, and then proceeds to REconstruct them before all is said and done. I was fine with the ending, and honestly I thought it felt more sweet than bitter: "This is the way things had to be for now, but there's nothing to say they'll remain like this forever." Definitely one of the all-time greats, and the sort of show that makes you want to rewatch it the moment you finish it.
