I dunno… you've read a lot more of them than I have, but there's enough counterexamples in some of the works that popularized the subgenre that I wouldn't call it a rule. Katarina Claes and Maria Campbell are of course the most famous, but Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu! was arguably the story that invented the Akuyaku Reijou reincarnation trope on Narou, and I think Reika and Wakaba became friends there too? And both were preceded by It Seems Like I Got Reincarnated Into the World of a Yandere Otome Game (which reads much like a prototype of Hamefura without the comedic approach), and Lycoris also becomes a close friend of the "heroine" character Lily there. That story doesn't treat Lycoris as uniquely "villainous" in the original game, but she very much fills the same role that the genre would apply the "akuyaku reijou" label to. |
