I called it...
But Andrew Cunningham wanted to sneakily label what I said as "all that stuff the poster up thread is saying". When not minding your business goes wrong. Last edited by Rob19ny on Fri Jul 26, 2024 10:56 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Count yourself lucky, Ikeda-sensei. And don't push that luck.
Seriously, you and Itsuki Nanao are like 42% of the way through LN4, and building toward a big climax for the series. It'd be a crying shame to lose your position now. Last edited by Shay Guy on Wed Jul 24, 2024 11:48 am; edited 1 time in total |

Tax evasion seems to be a pretty common crime mangaka/light novelist commit.

Is Japanese tax law insanely complicated? It seems creatives are constantly being prosecuted for tax shenanigans. Hire some accountants, people.

You are right, they should hire them. |

In this case, some of the details from previous reports make it hard to buy the "got tripped up by legal complexities" narrative. Like saying she planned to pay several years' worth of taxes all at once. |

They have offices with staff in every prefecture and they’ll do everything. I’m pretty sure it’s for free (not sure on this detail because I made very little while working there so they might have waived it for my broke self). As a foreigner I walked in, waited 5 minutes then sat with a lady for 10 minutes answering questions, job title, amount made, etc. They told me I was a broke foreigner (which resulted in my insurance going down to like $10/month from $30). Iirc I owed like $10 in tax which I paid on the spot and went to enjoy lunch in a neighborhood I rarely visited. |

Yeah, that part makes it sound more like a choice. It would be awfully strange to have a tax system that allows people to pay it whenever they decide to do it. |

The anime series A Sister's All You Need actually devoted most of an episode to the protagonist (a light novel writer) hiring an accountant who specializes in working with authors and manga-ka, one who was recommended to him by a fellow writer. It also, IIRC, specifically recommended a tax preparer or accounted for anyone whose main source of income is creative fields. That episode aired in 2017, so the issue is clearly not new in the field. |

Doing your taxes is very simple for Japanese people who have normal salary style income. They use pre-filled forms such as people would like to use in the USA but don't. The disadvantage is that if you have an unusual situation like a lot of independent author income, and you just turn back in the government pre-filled form, you are probably committing tax evasion. Just because the government pre filled a form and told you that this is what you owe does not mean that is correct, and if you don't fix it, it is illegal and your responsibility to tell the government about income it didn't know about. That's why it keeps happening to people who get their first big series. |

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Along with a series ending up paying for it.
In 2016, this is the same thing that happened with Mamare Touno. Author of the Light/Web Novel series, Log Horizon. He hasn't released anything new since 2018. And Log Horizon virtually fell off the map because of Mamare's Tax Evasion. Although, for Apothecary Diaries' case, it was the Manga adaptation. So, from what it sounds like, the Light Novels; which is the source material, should be okay. |

In Japan, is this.... negligence severe enough to ruin your career or reputation? Hopefully not.

Stay on good behavior!
I think even the LN author recommended they get an accountant. |

And even the manga is still running -- it's on track to finish the fourth light novel in a year, maybe a bit more. |
