Another drop for me, I already have two romance shows on my to watch list (Russian and Stepsister) and that is the very max for me. Senpai is an Otokonoko seems solid yet not above the other two.

Episode 1

I like it. The humour works for me and the ending where Makato puts their female clothing in a locker and says "Goodnight, me" was absolutely [expletive] heart-breaking.

The humor works for me too, and this show fits right in that category where I'd watch an anime just because of it's pretty backgrounds and musical scores even if I thought it was boring otherwise.

Well, a lot of times it skipped backgrounds almost entirely, but when it did show them, they were purdy. Was too lazy to edit that sidenote in there.

It does look lovely, I wish it aired in a season not asolutely filled to the brink with romance anime.

Looking at the title I was both excited and a little worried. My understanding is otokonoko can refer to a couple of different groups, that being GNC (Gender Non-Conforming) guys, and AMAB (Assigned Male At Birth) trans people, and the confusion of the two can be assuming those of the second are the first. As such, it is not really clear where Makoto is on this, whether they are GNC and still identify as a boy, a trans-girl, or maybe non-binary with a preference for feminine presentation. Although I am leaning on the trans side at the moment.

I know Saki is meant to be somewhat off-putting, but dang if her joy at finding out Makoto's gender thing felt relatable to my bisexual heart. Just as Maokoto's gender thing was somewhat relatable to my own experiences.

@DuskyPredator

Thanks for explaining what the initials meant. For those of us on the outside trying to understand what is going on there are a lot of unexplained initials, words we have not seen before and words that obviously don't mean what they used to. It all gets a bit confusing at times.

Episode 2

My take of the episode is that Makoto's mom is kind awful despite how nice she acts. It could be a bit silly that Maokoto was needing to be so performative with masculinity at home, but it just makes me feel really, how much she keeps pushing how boys should be, and also that Makoto is not allowed cute things. I guess the end of the episode might not really be their mum about to grill them over having a girly thing, but maybe she thinks that they stole something from a girl. But still that environment just seems so sad that Makoto cannot.

I guess I sort of can totally empathise with bits. That it did take some courage to start having cute things in my room. I bought my first doll a couple a couple months ago, and despite being out was a little scared of what others might think. Also currently wearing one of my only cute pieces of clothing. Never really had the opportunity like in the episode to go into the feminine shops that they went in the episode. Had the thought before if I got the opportunity to go for heels.

Also, for a moment thought I saw a blahaj, which for those in the know.

Makato's mother was pushing the masculinity thing to extremely ridiculous levels even going as far as saying that helping her with cooking isn't a job for boys. My mother was actually rather overjoyed when I asked her if she could teach me how to cook!

My take on mom's behavior is that she senses and knows her child is having a different take on who the child wants to be than a boy. She's had many hints already, but she doesn't accept the child the way the child is. And that's why she is so against anything cute. Sad. And infuriating.

It was cute seeing Makoto so happy and the three friends being so wholesome toegether even though on paper that would seem impossible given that two of them have insane crushes that could (should?) play negatively in their relationship dynamics. But Aoi Saki and the boy who's name I cannot remember are great in their acceptance of others people.

I can see the direction the drama is going. It seems more interesting than the standard love triangle show and exploring peoples sense of identity is a great direction to take in coming of age stories.

But for me, the humour just doesn't land and that seems to be a big slice of the show. Might not be one for me even in a thinner season.

It was actually quite a relief that the third episode reveals that Makoto’s father is accepting of his struggles and is willing to support him in whatever path he decides to take.

This was a better episode for me. Aoi especially, I think her rapport is actually better with Ryuji. Its good to see it continuing more down a drama route and it seems likely to address its issue much better than, say, Wandering Son did.

The no faces on side characters is a bit weird. Is that from the webcomic or just a cost saver for animation?

Episode 3

Man, this series really continues to hit me hard. The bit about long hair with a suit looking strange is particularly funny to me, seeing as I wear suits fairly often as a person with long hair. I am not nearly as brave enough to wear feminine clothing outside of a couple accessories, it can be tough when you know that dressing certain ways that might be desirable would certainly earn the wrong kind of attention. It can be easier to just bury certain sides of yourself, and it can even feel relieving to just lie to yourself about what you want.

All in all, it is going to be difficult for me to accept a narrative that might be that Makoto wants to dress cute, but is just boy. They are lucky in some elements of a supportive father, school administration and friends, but there is clearly so many background influences of how people treated them differently when they went into boy mode. Let alone when everyone is thinking in binaries that you can force yourself into one side.

Another line that hit me strongly was when Makoto was in boy mode and was complimenting the girl and thinking the wig is nice. Dang if that didn't feel relatable about trying to stop yourself from being into things that not normal for your assigned gender.
