Wait, Scott Westerfeld... The dude that did the Uglies series? Damn, haven't heard that name in ages. Used to enjoy his books though I haven't heard of this one.

Can't say I would've expected this in a million years! Leviathan, and its followups Behemoth and Goliath, were excellent YA novels, with some of the most imaginative world-building I've encountered in fiction. It's an alternate WWI Europe, where half the countries focus on genetically-engineered creatures for their weaponry, while the other half are all about building steampunk-esque mechs. A boy and girl from opposing sides in the war work together to save the day.

One thing that was notable about these books was that they were full of beautiful illustrations. So I suppose you could say they were kind of like Western light novels.

This sounds very cool. Might even look into trying to pick up the novels.

Alternate history.

The story begins in 1914 on the eve of war, when a prince on the run encounters a girl dressed in boy's clothes on a bioengineered airship known as Leviathan.

OK.... now you have my attention.

I remember coming across this series back when I worked at the library. The premise was intriguing, but I feared at the time it would favor only one side in the war while decrying the other, as YA books are oft to do. I might open up my mind better and give it another shot.

A set of YA novels being adapted into an anime? I'm sure it's happened before, but it's still a unique take.

Holy shit I read these books back in highschool! Always thought it was ripe for a live action film series. But an anime? Hype!

I was deeply baffled until I saw the Netflix logo. Now it makes sense. Deltora Quest is for kids but that Australian series had an anime. Valerian & Laureline got an anime before any other adaption (that film ain´t half bad) and we had tons of DC and Marvel anime. This happens here and there, even outside of Ghibli and the World Masterpiece shows, but it will happen more often now due to the globalized market.

Good on Zack Snyder for getting the top spot. If his reign ain´t prove that Netflix allows creators to work with no oversight (the novels based on his director's cuts of Rebel Moon are bonkers and those cuts will shake people) then I don´t know what can prove it. They literally asked him if he was interested in doing a cartoon on the side if he has an idea for the North gods and the show was greenlit on the spot when he said that he knows a guy who can make it happen, namely Jay Oliva. Long story short. Netflix shows or films are created as they crystalize in pre-production. If the end product ain´t it then don´t blame Netflix. Blame the directors and writers as they had more than enough rope to hang themselves.

Of all the western IPs that get a anime adaptation, I didn't expect this one to get that treatment. Man, this is a big surprise for me!!! I wonder what other unexpected western IP will get the Japanese animation treatment.

After Orange's beautiful work on the sci-fi designs of Trigun Stampede, I can't think of a more exciting studio to animate this story
