This thought just came up as I passed by my living room to see my mom watching CNN with the report on Obama's speech. Anyhow it started getting me thinking on politics and the thought occured:
Are there anime that have been created by the influence of politics? Of course from what I've watched the closest relevant anime I could think of were: Earth Girl Arjuna, Princess Mononoke and Karas but in their cases they were more influenced with environmental and social issues. |

Bandai's new release Flag is definitely politically charged, and while it's focus is more about the military aspect of the political excursion is does delve pretty heavily into the other arena's as well.

I'm not sure if this one is influenced by politics, but the whole Ghost in the Shell basically has to do with politics, spoiler[whether it's corruption, scandals, or a hostage situation that involves the government] (not sure if that needed spoilers or not, so I just put 'em)

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex gets political a lot of the time and there are plenty of anti-American overtones in the second season as well.

Also just to clear things up. I'm not really wondering about anime that involve politics in the storyline. What I did mean is anime that is influenced by current political issues. The best example I can think of right now is the movie Sicko by Michael Moore. It deals with the issue of socialized health care which to my knowledge is a big issue concerning the upcoming elections in the U.S. Forgive me if I'm incorrect, I've only minimally paid attention to U.S politics as I live in Canada.

I don't think it's any clearer what you're asking. 'Sicko' was a documentary ... so are you looking for an animated documentary from Japan? Or some other fact-based genre? The movie 'Grave of the Fireflies' might count, given it's based on semi-autobiographical source material and deals with, at the very least, the consequences of politically fuelled history-making. But the thing is, shows like 'Flag' and 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex' are influenced by current political issues, very much so. They may not be the same political issues facing you and me in Canada right now, but they're very real nonetheless. |

Yes it was a documentary but what I meant was that Sicko had political aspects dealing with it. As I mentioned it dealt with the health care system which is a political issue in america.

Well, there is this manga called Eagle, which is about how a 3rd generation Japanese American senator from New York named Kenneth Yamaoka is running for president.

I wouldn't say they are anti-American overtones as much as anti-everything overtones. The Canadians Ambassador's son is spoiler[in love with his sex doll.] China are a bunch of cowardly communists. England has members of parliament spoiler[try to assassinate random bank owners] Japan itself is even worse. America split in three, and only one of those are portrayed negatively. (The American Empire, the Russo-American Union and the United States of America. USA and RAU does nothing at all, AE is mean from time to time.) The only country with a positive portrayal is Germany, which did squat. The important thing to consider with politics in SAC is that they have evolved. Our modern politics have no bearing after two world wars. World War One changed Russia from a European Monarchy to the first Communist Regieme, Germany from an empire to a dictatorship. World War Two split Germany into a capitalist democracy and a communist state, threw the British Economy down the drain for the next 40 years, turned Norway from a developing country to a developed country, changed Japan, China, lead to the division of Korea, and countless other effects. Besides, I'm bored of "America saves the day." Why not subvert that a bit? When was the last time you saw the US as antagonists? No? It's really interesting and shows the political nature of SAC. It's not just Japanese internal politics that are the focus, but also the global politics that are in focus. |

Actually, even though only the action scenes in the second season was produced in Japan, I would count it, since it is anime inspired. Most anime fans probably wouldn't though But it has to be one of the most politically charged satires on television and happens to be one of my favorite shows. Almost everything in the show is just asking for controversy. |

Duh.....
-Ghost in the Shell is political as well as philosophical. It covers issues from the reason of a state's existence to the raison'd etre of a cyborg. -Appleseed, another product from Masamune Shirow, is as political as GitS. The Utopia, its pros and cons are all covered in great detail. Gunslinger Girl (the manga) gets political too from time to time, though mainly it's just philosophical. The topic's mostly related to the whole business of recruiting kids as killers. |

Pom Poko deals with the issue of urban sprawl and the depletion of our natural resources. It has some of the same environmental themes as Princess Mononoke. The separation of the human world from the natural or spiritual world due to progress.
This is a huge political issue with the price of oil right now. All politics aside this a great movie. "Ponpoko" is a word for the sound of tanuki tsutsumi (tanuki drum): According to Japanese legends, a tanuki would inflate its belly (or its testicles in another version) and beat upon it with its paws to scare wayfarers: pon poko pon poko pon. |
