If you don't have a broad familiarity with mecha series dating back to at least the late '90s then this is probably not a question you're going to be able to answer.

In an upcoming review of another title I want to say that Gonzo/Media Factory's first season of Vandread, released late in 2000, was the first anime series to feature all-CG animation for its mecha. Although I cannot think of an earlier example, I am uncertain about the accuracy of this statement. Can anyone cite an earlier or concurrent series which uses all-CG artistry on its mecha, or cite a source which confirms/denies my statement?

I'm afraid although I'm a HUGE mecha fan I can't say whether or not this is true (judging by the time period I'd hazard a guess and say it is)

I can guarantee that I haven't seen any older mecha series that use full CG

Didn't Divergence Eve also use full CG for it's actual mecha battles? My memory simply is failing me so I can't remember entirely. Even if it did I'm pretty sure Vandread pre-dates the first season of Divergence Eve. I can't think of any others that might pre-date it with full CG mecha either. Though this thread does make me think back to other older mecha shows like Nadesico and Patlabor which I haven't seen in a while. So thanks Key for making my "to watch" list even longer. Anime hyper

I can't think of anything that predates Vandread that was made up only of cg, quite a few shows used cg for parts of it like Macross Plus but not fully.

If memory serves, I believe Pilot Candidate had full CG mecha. I could be wrong, though, as it's been a long time since I saw the series. For all it's worth, it came out in early 2000 so it does predate Vandread.

EDIT: Darn typos ....

You and me both. But I did a search of ANN's encyclopedia for mecha series between 2000 and 1990 and Pilot Candidate was one of them. Then it all came back .... unfortunately. Rolling Eyes

I never finished the series myself.

1 episode was enough for me, word of mouth indicated it didn't improve and like the first Vandread series it just stopped without a conclusion. But unlike Vandread it wasn't popular enough to get a second season.

Ah, no fair. I spent so long looking for that, and you put up an answer first.

I did notice that Initial D had cg cars, and by a very loose definition, I guess they could be considered "mecha". But not the type which you were referring to.

I did find this, which should support Jedi General:

Also, this was interesting: This.
It mentions that Oshii used cg for Patlabor, but doesn't say what it was used for.

Same here. I watched it solely because a friend had recommended it to me. Back then, he said it was his "#1 favorite anime of all time." He must really like impossibly bad mecha shows or something ....

Sorry. Anime smile + sweatdrop But hey, at least you found something to support my statement. For that I thank you.

By the way, Key, is your impending review one of the first Aquarion box set by any chance? I can't think of any other new mecha series being released at this point in time.

I hope not lol. I say that because I just bought it and I truth Theron's reviews so I'll feel sorta silly by not waiting to see a review of it first. I was unsure about buying the series, I've heard about it for a while now, and was waiting for a review but since Best Buy didn't have vol 5 of OMG season 2 I opted to get Aquarion instead. So I hope the extra money for the difference in price between the two was well spent. I'm scared now to actually watch the show lol.

The first three titles that came to mind were Pilot Candidate, Galaxy Angel, and Geneshaft. Looking up dates it would seem that Pilot Candidate predates Vandread, while the other two were released soon after Vandread in 2001. I might also be off if these shows used non-CG since I'm just going off of memory.

Would Galaxy Angel really qualify as a mecha show anyway? Sure it has them some in it but they're not the main focus by far. Maybe that's just me though.
