I probably got into anime a little later than most of the other people on this site, but I absolutely love the stuff and can't get enough of it. My problem is that I don't know anybody else who likes anime. I made my wife watch some, and she likes one or two Miyazaki films, but hates everything else. I really wish I had some other people in my life who share my love for anime. Does anybody have a suggestion on how I can find some like-minded individuals in the area of Everett, WA?

Well as I see it you have 3 viable ways you could go about finding more people around you into anime. The first is right here at ANN, or other similar sites. I know personally of 3 people here alone that live in WA as well. I'm sure there's more. So as you stay here longer, or other sites, you'll notice more and more people that might live near you. The second option is an anime club. More and more colleges are starting their own clubs run by fans. So you might want to look at local colleges to see if indeed there is one with an anime club near you. The third option, and a guaranteed way to fans heh, is to go to a convention. You might want to check out [url]www.AnimeCons.com [/url] to find ones closest to you. You're sure to meet fellow fans at a convention and trust me when I say you get people from all over the US at cons. So if there's one near you then I'm sure you're bound to find some fellow fans that live near you. You guys might even be able to start your own club heh.

Happens in just a few weeks at the Seattle Convention center- it's HUGE (broke into the top 10 biggest US cons last year.) Even if you can't make it to the event proper, the forums are full of Puget Sound area fans... I'm sure there's someone from Everett in there.

For me, I kept my eyes open at school and found someone drawing some anime stuff and started up a conversation. My town is too small to have a convention or club, so that was pretty much the only way for me to find fellow fans in my actual town. I also joined a club in the nearest decent-sized city, and started attending JAFAX and Acen, though people I meet there I mostly communicate with online for obvious reasons.

In my town there are only a couple of people I can think of that are regular anime watchers, and I wasn't really close friends with them, but I would talk to them about it sometimes. There's quite a few casual watchers here though. My roommate is a casual watcher and I have several friends who are casual watchers.

Thanks for the great advice, everyone. I might very well look into going to Sakura Con. I knew it took place in Seattle, but I didn't know it was happening so soon.
As far as finding people at school, I'm afraid that won't work for me. I graduated HS in '98, and went to college 'til '01. |

I envy you guys, if only there are locals out there who knows this kind of thing, but I end up to nothing, majority here in my country they don't usually put an interest on these kind of hobby.
Actually there are only few people who knows about knowing deeply in this kind of thing, most of them knows only popular series, but deeper on to that they don't know actually what I mean. When I went to college, I thought there are people who knows this thing. It's much more boring than I thought, I want my latter co-leagues and talk about this. Not to get boring, I go to cons, I was surprised when there is a booth about forums and discussions on a certain Animation TV Channel which is called Hero, I'm not active though, but I like their discussions and not to mention, ANN is more interesting when discussing a certain topic. |

I dont mean to be choosy or be stereotyping but in my case, finding people who match the same interest is one thing but an intellectual discussion is very rare. Its always the people who lack any actual common sense (emotional intelligence is the word that more accurately) that I see especially the teens to early 20s area. Simply put, even if someone has the same interest as you, doesn't necessarily mean you will strike an engaging conversation. I tried to open up more to some of the people I'm talking about by watching a show together but its definitely more enjoyable watching it alone. An example of an idiot would be like a kid in my school who walks the crowded halls reading manga at the same time while bumping into people constantly. Its not just the actions they do but the behavior of the way they talk but then again there are people everywhere who don't think before they talk. Discussion on forums is alot more enjoyable but thats my opinion

If you're looking for some sort of anime club to take part in, you might check out the social networking sites. I suspect a lot of clubs maintain some kind of page to help find people interested in joining them. The club I sponsor at my college has a myspace group page, and we had a few people find us through there. Also, some clubs maintain their own webpages. Doesn't hurt to do a google search. |

Sadly enough I find that chatting with people on forums is the closest I am going to get to striking intelligent anime discussions, and that is just fine by me. In college I tried attending the anime club but a lot of the people were just too obnoxious- it was a group of friends that ran the club and if you didn't like what they liked or disagreed with them about anything, they would ignore you and it didn't make things very fun. I tried striking up conversations with other people at the movie viewings that were ignored, but as CLODUS said, just because you like anime doesn't mean you'll be able to have a decent conversation, let alone be friends.
But that's fine with me. I like being the "weirdo" in my group of friends that likes her cartoons and her porno comics. Makes me unique

Celes and Clodus, thank you for your contributions. I suppose I was a bit naive to assume that a shared interest in anime would equal an intellectual or personal compatibility. I had considered the possibility that I would run into the problems that the two of you have encountered, but I guess I was also hoping that I might still find some like-minded individuals. Perhaps your opinions that the forums are the best place to find such people are indeed correct. Probably a good thing 'cause I wasn't exactly looking forward to going to my first con by myself.

Yeah. I've had similar problems. I friend of mine introduced me to someone who loved anime and, at first, I was totally psyched to meet my first other live person that liked anime. After talking with her for a while I was a bit dissapointed though. We still get together and talk anime and watch shows, but she gets WAY too into the characters. I get attached to certain characters too sometimes, but she seriously talks about them like they're real and that makes me cringe a little. Still, it's nice to at least have someone to hang out and watch anime with. I'd love to find someone I could watch with AND have an intellectual conversation with about the content as well. Until then, you guys are my only anime buddies and sounding board. So, thanks for being here! If you know of any anime fans in VA please send them my way! |

I enjoy watching anime with others, but not with "anime fans" so much. That may seem odd, but anime fans can be overly opinionated about what they watch and having non-fans around who are simply open enough to watch some random anime with you is the best possible situation IMO. I don't try to get people into anime fandom, but I might suggest we throw on some anime if they happen to be over for a drink or something.
