im new to here so sorry if this might need to be moved i didint really know where else to put it so here it goes.

im a 10 year old boy and im a HUGE fan of manga and anime drawing it's practically my hobbie but my only problem is my freinds they critisize me for liking it and also random people in my church like this one boy is so annoyed that i read watch and draw it and critisize's me and say's like "why do like anime?!" and "you suck at drawing" and "like why do like girl stuff?!?!" and it pisses me off!!!
and i don't really have the guts to walk in a store and buy myself a manga book.
and i really like shojo manga like sailor moon and cardcaptors sakura and gals and lot's more so when i go in public and buy let's say gals manga the casher looks at me like im gay or stupid im neither!
and i don't have any freinds that like manga excecpt one who compare's drawing's my drawing to her's and it make's me feel real stupid!

and i feel weird liking shojo manga because everybody critisizes me for it.
and i really would like to do manga for a living but like this boy in my class alway's make's fun of me for reading it and one i was talking to my freind about how i wanted to do manga for a living he over heard and said you're go enough to do manga! Crying or Very sad
i even remember one time when i was buying a pichi pichi pitch a while ago the cashier said you're buying a girl book?! and i didint say anything and just stood there with my cheeks red as cute little tomtao

what im saying is i don't know wht to do since everybody's says dont like this dont like that if you could me some advice i'd be very greatful.

Plenty of men read shoujo don't be embarrased be proud Very Happy I'm a guy and most of my manga collection is shoujo and I'm not embarrased at all. Don't worry about what others think of you just keep on reading what you enjoy.

If people make fun of your drawings ignore them. That's just plain rude Evil or Very Mad

There's nothing wrong with a boy reading shojo manga...I know I've read more than my fair share. Smile If your friends and classmates keep making fun of you for it, one of the easiest ways to get them to stop is to just keep acting like it doesn't bother you. If they try to make fun of you for liking it and it doesn't make you mad, they'll move on to something else.

You really shouldn't be embarrassed by the cashiers that sell you the manga you buy. If they stand there and judge you and make you feel bad, they aren't doing their job right....their job is to make you happy and get you to spend money. If you're really that embarrassed by it, though, you could either have your mom or dad buy them for you, or see if they would buy them online so you can get them delivered right to your house. There are many great online stores (my favorite is www.rightstuf.com) that sell manga for even cheaper than you pay for it in a bookstore!

Good luck, man!

Yeah. It's not weird for a male to read a manga intended for girls. Just because that's its demographic doesn't mean only girls can read shojo manga. If that were the case, only guys would be able to read shonen manga.

I'm a guy myself and some of my favorite series are shojo. I've started to really like Aishitzure Baby(Mostly because I like how cute the artwork is) and another of my favorites is Strawberry Marshmallow (If you'd consider it shojo).

As for people criticizing your work, ignore them. Those kids that make fun of the way you draw now may actually be kicking themselves in the butt years later because you might be a better drawer than they are. And as for your drawings, if you really have a love for drawing, you could try and prefect your style. That's what I did and it took me three years, all by myself just to make it the way I want it to look today. Just keep drawing and over the years, you should notice a change in the way you draw.

I hope that helps you. And don't worry about people making fun of you for liking anime. All that matters is what you like.

While I am a girl myself, there is nothing wrong about a guy liking shojo. After all girls like shounen, right? I've seen plenty of girls going through the pages of Naruto so why can't a guy read something like Fruits Basket. (Sorry I never got the magical girl thing, but hey to each his own.)

Be proud of what you like. I know it isn't easy. However, I would like to ask you one question: How much of the criticism is in your head? I know you cited some statements you recevied (BTW how rude!), but if a lot of it is in your head then you need to find a way to be comfortable with a "guy buying/drawing shojo". Even as a newbie to the anime/manga genre I was embarrased to buy items thinking everyone in the store was staring at me. Then, I got over it and discovered that no one really cared.

As for feedback on your illustrations I can only suggest looking into community forums that allow you to post pictures/fan or original manga. This allows you to get some exposure to other fans of manga/anime. However, I would caution you that criticism can be harsh. If you post anything on the Internet be prepared to have other's tell you it is bad. Especially in the case of art some people preferences differ widly. However, do close yourself off to criticism because it can make you a better artist. Therefore, if your work is received as "junk" ask why. If the dialogue is bad or the movements are jumbled this is good feedback. Use it to improve yourself. As a fan/writer of fan ficition there is nothing I hate more than a bad writer refusing to accept constructive criticism.

P.S. and please do not take offense (I don't mean it that way):
You're only ten years old - you've got a long way to go. I'm not sure how mature you are or how well your art is developed (you never know), but remember that you have plenty of time. Time to get comfortable with the shojo genre and time to develop your skills.

If this helps, im an almost 18 year old boy that only reads shojo and yaoi and you know what, if they make fun of you, who cares. they haven't figured out that greatness of shojo manga yet.

now about that whole booksellers giving you grief, dont worry about it. I've had my plenty of embarrassing stories, but i still buy them and hope for that same cashier, just to rub in their face like i like "girl" manga.

Just like kyokazahaya, (although I'm 18) I like reading Shojo titles. It's because I love romance.

Well as the others mentioned don't listen to them.

Anyway don't be embarass buying Shojo titles, I myself buy shojo everyday and I don't care. Last week or so, I bought Absolute Boyfriend and I'm proud of it, heck I love this series. And the cashier didn't say anything.

As for your classmates just ignore them and continue liking shojo as well as your drawings.

Although it's easier to give advice but in real situation it's hard to do. I hope you find courage to overcome their criticisms.

If going to a bookstore to buy shoujo manga embarrasses you, you could try getting it at a comic book store (though you might have to special order it). The owners of the comic shops I go to aren't the sort to judge you.

On the other hand, you could just go buy it anyway...it might be a bit embarrassing, but hey, it's what you like! Who cares. The people who're making fun of you are jerks. You'll meet a lot of them, and you've just gotta ignore/be above their pettiness.

Sorry, no.

This I agree with. Strawberry Marshmallow runs under the Dengeki Comics label, taking it out of the shojo genre. It's targeted at males anyway, with it's author also being male.

There's nothing wrong with reading shojo, I happen to own about 10 series myself. Thing is I've never come across my Japanese friends yet to question why I'm reading shojo manga, but when they do I'm going to simply explain to them about why I like it etc. Like Stuckinfresno said you've got a ways to go, like you said you're only ten, there's going to be a lot that's going to happen in life for you, and hopefully you'll learn from the experiences.

I Read any and all manga i can get my hands on but Shojo is my favorite kind and I'm a 15 year old guy. The people who make fun of you really ussually don't know what they're missing out on. If you like shojo then keep reading forget the people that say its bad they should try something before they say its bad Crying or Very sad . I think its really cool that someone at your age is reading manga at all. GOOD Luck reading more shojo and try to forget what other people think Okay. Very Happy
