"Simon's like, the only one who could get around the firewall."
In older movies they would always establish which character was "the hacker" by having them type gibberish into a command line prompt at incredible speeds, accomplishing nothing.
So I guess having the hacker be skilled at anime piracy is at least a step up from that.

The former at least presents something resembling skills beyond those of an average person, even if it's ultimately nonsensical. This presents being able to use google and click on a website as "advanced".

Imagine pronouncing "nyaa" that way.
And before anyone has a heart attack, that's not me being mean spirited to the actress. If anyone in directing or on set had any clue about the reference being genuine and not some kind of "look, look, ANIMU REFERENCE!!", they could've corrected her. Instead, it's presented as is- a really out of place reference to appear, as the kids say, hip.

Someone should tell them that they can stream Deca-Dence on Crunchyroll(TM).

Calling this show a disaster is an understatement. The script and writing is so, so bad.
Say what you will about Welcome to Raccoon City being a mess of ideas, at least it felt like RE. This show wishes it were as good as that movie.

Interesting note, when you fire up Netflix, that scene is the preview of the series that plays for you.

The whole point of these adaptations is to immerse your self in the world and story, seperate from reality. A fictional universe the creator concieved. Why the hell would you mention Nya torrents and anime in a resident evil adaptation? I am so sick of these modern tv shows trying to intermix modern stuff into our shows.
This is just as bad as the lord of the rings adaptation where one of the characters says something like "I want to explore a fantastical world of all imaginging" yearning for adventure but yet Tolkien concieved the middle earth to be there reality, its not a god damn isekai, holy shit. I am tried of popular works and properties like this being completly destroyed and just being exploited for financial gain.

I honestly couldn't believe they actually mentioned nyaa. Like, it's a real-life anime torrenting site where you can also find, you know, the shows Netflix OWNS which you'd think they don't want people to pirate... I just don't understand what they're trying to accomplish here, whether it be in real life or in the show's context.
But hey, now nyaa will become even more well-known. Good job there, service-I-certainly-am-not-going-to-paying-for.

Except here’s the problem with this logic the Resident Evil franchise eventhough it takes place in a fictional world has some real world leanings. Which is how Umbrella a shady pharmaceutical company which is meant to serve as a stand in for real shady pharmaceutical companies are considered villains in the canon. As much people like to argue about how certain mediums are supposed to break from reality they’re not going to do so entirely.

That sounds more like a fourth wall joke than simply the writers having the characters say something bad.

I mean that’s kinda on brand if you remember how clunky the dialog (& acting) in the games were.

Let along that the script writer unintentionally (or intentionally considering this level of a writing skill) mentioning the show that copyrighted not by Netflix, but competitive streaming service, which make the whole situation even worse.
But hey, we talk about the show that also include something like the mentioning of reading Zootopia porn. Like, really, the script writing of THIS is that disgraceful to absolutely anything, let alone original game franchise.
