So the part that people complained about for having questionable aesthetic and adaptation decisions and overall rushed production won AotY? Makes sense.
Best animation goes to the reused movie footage put on TV to sell more blu ray discs. Long story short, these results is what happens when you let the public vote, shonen anime will take everything.

But Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1 is an anime from 2020, not 2021.

The award timing stretches from December to December. That's why Titan was eligible while Jojo's Part 6 was not.
The biggest question mark is why the hell Jujutsu Kaisen was eligible.

Nice nice nice winners we got here, Demon slayer best animation without a doubt, Attack on Titan Part 1 is hard to disagree with.

I might not care for the results but this^ is just a no-win situation:
When critics vote and people don't like the result= "They're out of touch with the public"
When the public vote and people don't like the result= "Ït's just a popularity contest" or "they're normies" or (and my favorite) "they should only let people who watched X amount of shows vote".
While there are other ways of voting that might give niche shows a better chance (e.g. ranked-choice) the bigger issue, IMO, is that there is no apparent limit to how many categories a show can be nominated for. WEP got 11 nominations ffs.

It says that there's a 70/30 split with judges and voters that should in theory help protect all the popular series from winning everything... but I'm thinking their system isn't working.
I'm not trying to hate on Demon Slayer - I haven't seen it, for all I know it's a masterpiece - but I imagine vastly more western fans have seen the Demon Slayer movie compared to Belle or Eva, so it's likely to win the popular vote on that alone. So were there multiple judges that agreed a Demon Slayer compilation movie was really the best anime movie of the past year? Or maybe there was a split between the judges, so the popular vote canceled all of the judges out?
Or if the Demon Slayer compilation movie was really just that good, please tell me. Although popularity contest aside, compilation films seem to be sort of... double-dipping, in an award sense, unless they really bring something new to the table.

These awards as always are a joke. Sadly, they never make me laugh.
Wake me up when they pick something actually good as AotY and not just whatever is popular and hot among normies.

Mugen Train is actually very good, went into the theater fully prepared to bash the movie, came out as a hardcore Rengoku fan.
The best movie of last year, even with Gintama the Final being in the fray.

Gintama didn't win a single award despite how over-the-top is its fan base

HUH I must be really out of the loop on how popular AoT still is, I was definitely not expecting it to win anime of the year.
I'm really glad ODDTAXI got in best protagonist and best director though, it really deserved those. Not surprised about Wonder Egg not winning anything after that terrible ending, I was surprised to see it nominated for anything at all (though I did vote for it for best character design, that's one aspect I always really liked in it) I'm also surprised to see To Your Eternity won best drama! It had a really strong start and then went downhill in quality until it managed to save itself at the very end with a good finish.
Fruits Basket not winning ANYTHING really hurts though I thought Laura Baily's performance as Tohru was amazing.

Mushoku Tensei and Fruits Basket not even making an apperance is where I had to disregard these awards. I know taste is subjective but come on, not even a nomination?

I agree, but Mugen Train wasn't a compilation movie. The tv episodes that followed it were the movie broken down into 24 min bites, beginning with one preceding episode that wasn't part of the movie, plus some extra epilogue material that segued into the current arc. To me, that's where the double-dip comes in.

Yeah that overall spread is kind of dire looking at it all together. Including the multiple language VA categories, 18 of the 26 categories went to Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, or Demon Slayer. The only categories that didn't go to one of them where they were nominated were Best Director, Best Protagonist, and Best English VA.
If something is left up to a wide audience vote, you're all but guaranteed to see one or two mega hit shows dominate, but I do think there are ways to at least limit how many categories those shows can steamroll. I understand the judges' selections for nominees are non-collaborative, but somebody in charge could maybe make a judgement call on how many categories any given series can be nominated in.
Not to mention just all the weird decisions surrounding those same big titles. AoT and JJK both getting multiple nominations in a single category. JJK technically being from the previous year. Demon Slayer being nominated for both the Mugen Train TV series AND the movie version despite being nearly identical. If anything, instead of mitigating a steamroll (like what they did when judges basically overruled MHA s2 winning AOTY and going with Made In Abyss in 2017) they basically encouraged these titles to dominate the entire spread. If the plan going forward is to stack the deck for already hugely popular titles, I don't know what the difference is between these awards and those charts CR used to make of the Most Watched shows each year.
That's even assuming CR goes for these awards again, considering this year had perhaps the least effort or attention since they started them. I understand not doing a livestream like previous years, but not even a pre-recorded video premiere on youtube? Just dropping the winner announcements?

Part of me just wonders why they just don't give two awards for each category: The Judges Award & The Crowd Award
At this point, it's obvious that even the 70/30 split between how the votes are tallied aren't doing enough to prevent the Anime Awards from being anything more than a popularity contest that results in too much of the same. Also, this isn't the freakin' Oscars, especially since this year's results weren't even given any sort of pomp & circumstance, so just start acknowledging that there are discrepancies between what the judges like & what the crowd likes and give each category two awards that represent each side of the coin.
Seriously, I don't think anyone's going to seriously argue that doing this would "hurt the credibility" of the Anime Awards, or something absurd like that. If anything, it might actually allow for more variety in the results, in general.
