I'm very surprised to hear about Bastard!! in the news again. At least someone in Japan still has a taste for older properties.

This is the first time that I've been hyped up for an anime since Devilman Crybaby. I have a feeling many people will probably rate it low for being too echi when Bastard!! never takes it self too seriously. The series is over the top trashy fun which is why it's in my top 10 favorite manga of all time. I want the original English voices to come back because I do like the dub cast a lot.

I hope it's popular enough to have mutiple seasons. Devilman Crybaby proven to be a big hit despite being a fad. So anything is possible.

What.
WHAT?
WHAAAAAAT?!

My favorite guilty pleasure is getting a reboot?! This is insane! Oh, please let it turn out well. I hope the new voice cast can impress; it's hard to imagine anyone but Kazuki Yao as Dark Schneider, for instance.

Given all the re-adaptations of older properties we had only in the last decade: Hunter X Hunter, Ushio to Tora, Devilman, Dragon Quest Adventures of Dai, Magical Circle Guru Guru, Orphan etc. I wouldn't say this is one person, or a few people.

This is really cool, unexpected news. The character art looks great!

Why is "modern" in quotations?

I doubt Netflix will tone down anything because they are laid back when it comes to content. Netflix is the same streaming service that has Love from Gaspar Noé on their platform and that film is basically porn with a plot.

If one looks at the really popular entries on Netflix‘a anime lineup, they really embrace the “blood, violence and sex appeal” (the first two more so) aesthetic many people thought made up the entire medium in the 90s. It’s actually kind of a throwback, which does explain Netflix getting a lot of stuff like Spriggan, Kengan Ashura and Record of Ragnarok. I see no reason they would do anything but embrace Bastard’s “dark fantasy heavy metal” aesthetic for all that it’s worth.

This is...surprising.
I wonder what part of the manga they will adapt. The latter volumes are...peculiar, to say the least.

Far racier titles than the Bastard!! OVAs have been out in the last few years. Its antics are actually pretty mild compared to fare like, say, World's End Harem.

I'll be curious to see if they can actually get Darrin Norris back for the dub.

I imagine that this will start from the beginning, since The Dark Rebel Armies is ~7.5 volumes long (the second longest arc) & can easily last 2 whole cours alone.
Anyway, I am absolutely psyched for this, & I've always felt that the only place a new Bastard!! anime could even get aired on would be Netflix. As for anyone who thinks "Well, the manga isn't finished, so it'll have to stop somewhere", while that is true I don't expect this anime to really get to that point anytime soon. Dark Rebel Armies is 2 cours, easily, while you can maybe get away with Hell's Requiem and Crime & Punishment each getting 1 cour (the latter would be pushing it, especially if you try to include what little of The Seal of Magical Power was made), & The Immoral Laws is another 2 cours.
That alone would take a few years to produce, similar to Baki on Netflix. However, Bastard!! also has a variety of audio dramas & novel stories that mostly act as fully-canon prequels to the manga story, so the anime could even eventually adapt those, if they really need more content. All in all, should this anime do well enough, they have enough content for 75-100 episodes, depending on just how deep into the lore they go.

hmm, 30 years in the making. This is deffinitly something I did not expect though I will keep my expectations low. Its also going to be quite challenging to present that sort of thematic hard rock/metal band style of animation with its mix of punk genre. That is just something that was quite predominate in the 80's and early 90's so I don't know. Modernizing things now a days kind of deconstructs alot of what these source materials conveyed in tone and style. Its why im not overly enthusiastic about new projects these days especially after seeing how the classical dark fatasy of berserk was treated. They are SO different in how they are portrayed now that were more in this moe/harem/isekai and 3DCG era of the industry with its more typical shonen esque and moe trends dominating our medium. Its a very different vibe now a days. Then what the boom of 80's adult animation brought to the industry.
Not saying that is a bad thing that all new animated projects suck, because that is absolutely false. Im just saying when working with an adapted work that followed that kind of 80's aesthetic and gritty style of dark fantasy with sex, violence and nudity and picturistic panneling of stylistic art like berserk. It will be hard to translate that for today's modern audience with out feeling like some sort of blend of today's moe/isekai culture in some way, or the style may be more vibrant and not have that dungeons and dragons/castlevania look. What ever the case, I am still going to check this out because its been decades since the 90's anime ova hit the air streams.
