Well that confirms all the concerns that people have had with this show (High Guardian Spice).Surprised to see that Onyx Equinox had a low budget, considering it's animation looked like your typical anime influenced show.

The budget may be low but I don't buy it. The story, quality, and general feel of the show was substandard. You can only blame so much on the budget.
Maybe take responsibility and recognize they just didn't have a good product?

Did you even read Raye's Twitter thread? They weren't even allowed to go back and fix any mistakes they made, story and animation-wise. The whole thing is Crunchyroll's fault because they set HGS up to fail with their own bad decisions, both in marketing and pushing the team to their limit.

It feels like with Sony now at the reins and content to buy ALL THE ANIME, the originals line is going the way of the Anime Strike, which is why they’re discussing their limitations so freely.
At least Sophia Alexander landed on her feet with X-Men 97.

Um, you realize that budgets can effect quality and story, too, right? More established writers command higher fees for their scripts, so you end up having to higher less experienced writers. Plus, low budgets mean shorter deadlines, which means less time for writers to refine their work. (Raye Rodriguez mentions in the Twitter thread that deadlines and money were so tight that the team had to begin the storyboards for the first episode before the script had even been finished. That's virtually unheard of. Frankly, with those constraints I'm impressed that the team finished the season at all.)
I mean, a high budget doesn't guarantee good scripts, but a low budget makes good scripts a lot less likely. You get what you pay for, and Crunchyroll seemed unwilling to pay for quality work.
(of course, then you have the irony that they produced the show under a huge time crunch due to Crunchyroll wanting it completed very quickly, only for Crunchyroll to not release it for two years after it was completed. That must be a frustrating irony for everyone who worked on it.)

That all the male characters (except homosexuals) were bad characters in the show, and the story was written as if the world was a better place without men's, is it related to the budget and is it the crunchyroll's fault?

Yeah, I really doubt Raye and Sophia would be talking so openly about the production process if there was a snowball's chance of these shows getting second seasons. Maybe Crunchyroll gave them official notice recently which is why they feel comfortable talking about it.
It's a shame, Onyx Equinox was a legitimately great show, and HGS, while flawed in many ways, had a lot of passion and love behind it, and you could tell the creators were pushing themselves to make something which was important to them despite a lot of obstacles.
Frankly, I'd rather have one flawed, unevenly animated show with actual passion and heart behind it than a hundred cynically pandering interchangable Isekai shows with pretty visuals. But all the passion in the world won't help when your company mismanages your work so terribly.

High Guardian Spice could have been a decent show, but no - instead we got a medicore, generic, ham fisted magical girl esque show whose concept of 'Four girls go to a school to train to become heroes' has been done way better by other shows(Little Witch Academia,RWBY). I now regard this series as being on par with Neo Yokio in terms of awfulness rather than the other awesome anime influenced shows out there (Castlevania,Voltro :Legendary Defender,Avatar:The Last Airbender, etc).
And thank you, Raye Rodriguez for confirming that this show is a cartoon and not an anime
On another note, I have to disagree with what Onyx Equinox creator Sofia Alexander said
Quote: | I wouldn't have been able to represent LGBT+ characters or a story about trauma and grief anywhere else |
Netflix probably would have loved to air your show

You're forgetting that there are three male characters that are portrayed sympathetically: Parnelle, Slime Boy, and Thyme's father. I don't deny that there are things HGS could have improved on, but complaining about it isn't going to change anything.

Makes sense, bad budget, bad time, bad product, even if I enjoyed a lot of it

My sympathies for Alexander are far greater than for Rodriguez, but the truth is Netflix wouldn’t have greenlit either show when they’re getting an active pipeline to bigger studios and bigger properties that they can market as originals. Hell, Equinox’s equivalent at Netflix, Blood of Zeus was done with Powerhouse Animation vs the low budget studio they used, and ended up being far more successful (probably because Zeus was able to use a lot of the goodwill Castlevania built up to promote itself).

Rosemary & Sage's Dads are also portrayed as kind and they're some of the earliest male characters we meet. The blacksmith teacher that Parsley looks up to is also warm and was actually one of my favorite incidental characters.
I feel like people who are determined to hate this show are going to hate it no matter what, and I just hope these same people are watching and lifting up Precure, Pripara and Kiratto Pri-chan on Crunchyroll if supporting anime for young girls is so darn important to them.

I mean, that was clear from day 1, when Crunchyroll dropped a (terrible) trailer that said nothing except "minorities are working on this show!" and everyone on 4chan decided that was enough reason to despise it.
HGS absolutely had some quality issues, but about 2/3rds of the people hating on it would still hate it just as much if the show looked better than a Miyazaki film.
