I’m only at episode 80 so things might change in the future but so far I’ve noticed that none of the bad guys that Luffy and his nakama beat are actually shown to die from it. Maybe this is done so that these bad guys might return again in future episodes but in some episodes it just doesn’t make sense for them to have survived.

Let’s take the episode where Luffy and gang beat up Arlong and his mermen. We are never shown any conclusive evidence as to any of them, including Arlong himself, actually dying. They seem to be badly hurt but they are shown still being able to speak and move around a little. It really doesn’t make sense for them to survive that battle since then they would be back terrorising the island and the whole of east blue once the recuperate.

Another is the battle against "Number 3" and the others on the island "Little Garden". Even though they defeat the bad guys we are never shown what happens to them after that. "Number 3" is slashed by Zorro’s flaming katana so he might be dead but what about the other three (The little girl that paints, the bugger-bomb guy and the cute albeit psychotic weight lady)? Surely if they stay on the island they will still pose a threat to the two giants or they might escape and tell "Mr. 0" what has happened.

On the whole it seems this show is not shy about showing people being slashed to pieces just as long as they are not shown actually dying from it. Very few people are actually shows to be, without a doubt, dead and I think that is a little strange. And so we are often not shown what happens to the bad guys once they have been defeated.

By the way, what is the age group that this show is aimed at in Japan?

That's right, no one has ever died in One Piece (except during flashbacks). At a recent convention (Jump Festa), Oda did say that a One Piece crewmember will die at some point this year. Of course the problem with this is, that at Jump Festa last year he said a crewmember was going to leave, which never happened (he said that the Skypiea arc lasted longer than he expected so he didn't get around to it.)

I would say that One Piece is aimed at teenagers.

That monster! How can he not kill any of the bad guys, many of whom very much deserved to die, but kill one of the beloved crew?

I wonder who it is going to be; hope it’s not one of my favourites… oh wait, I love them all equally!

In Shonen Jump March 2003 (Number 3) They had an interview with Eiichiro Oda-Sensei and when asked about his villains' incredible constitutions, he said: "Even if peace is attained after a battle, if there are dead people, it doesn't feel good, so I don't like it. I think one of the good things about manga is that you're forgiven if you let your characters survive situations which would have killed real people."

I think that he lets his villains live as a kind of repentence for selfsame villains getting the crap kicked out of them.
spoiler[Mr. 3, Mr. 5, Miss Valentine's and Miss Golden Week all survived, but only Mr. 3 returns later.]
I myself am somewhere near episode 125, just after the Luffy vs. Mr 0 spoiler[Crocodile] battle, and didn't spoiler[Vivi leave the crew? I thought she stayed in Alabasta and Robin joins the crew in her place...Actually, since I don't know what SkyPiea is, I'm assuming you're much farther into the series than I am, but perhaps Oda meant in the anime?]
Anyway, as long as Sanji, Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Nami, Usopp, and Robin survive, I'll be fine. Wait, that's everybody...ACK! Please don't die! I hope nothing happens to Hi-Ken no Ace either...(He looks like Kid Rock!...Kinda)
I would agree with Legato. One Piece is aimed at 13-18 year olds.

Oda said he didn't like killing off characters.

And yes, leaving villians alive lets them come back later.. like spoiler[Buggy, Hachi, Axe-Hand Morgan, Alvida, and Jango]

I personally believe Zoro will die.. he's the only one that would make sense. We've seen countless times that he pushes himself beyond his limits and that he has his own twisted ways of fighting... like in Little Garden. spoiler[He was going to cut off his ankles so he could continue fighting Mr 5.]

He's the only insane one enough to die trying to protect his crew.. or perhaps Tashagi or in a final duel with Mihawk.

Or just watch Oda mean that the 'ship' is a crewmate too and their ship gets destroyed. Either way...

And One Piece is a Shounen Manga/Anime.. Aimed for 11-13 year olds.

Yeah I like his personality a lot. First he tries to chop off his own feet then when he realises that he might not make he strikes a pose! That is just Zorro in a nutshell for you.

As I said I'm only at episode 80 so I haven't seen any of the future crewmembers yet but I have a funny feeling that it will be Usopp that will die. He wants to be a brave warrior of the sea and I think that he will become one by dying protecting his friends.

Zorro definitely won't die before he defeats Mihawk and fulfils his ambition of becoming the strongest swordfighter in the world. Here is to that the crew hunt down and find the seven dragon balls and revive their fallen nakama after his/hers death.
