Kind of figured the response would be that the contracts were signed well beforehand, so they have to follow through. Even if it may seem out of character, I think some forgot two important things: the first is that the IP holders would have no say in whether the Olympics happen. The other is that those characters are ultimately property that was already bought and paid for by now.

She's absolutely right, but of course people usually aren't thinking from a business perspective that contracts were involved when they use emotion to express themselves. It still blows my mind that in an event that holds many games, they did not get the Game King (Yami Yugi) to be a promotional character. Still a goof.

I don't know about Atom, but it seems perfectly in character for Usagi to not care.

Usagi would be super-enthused about the games, and Luna would have to explain to her why holding them during a pandemic is a problem. Then she'd have an emotional crisis about it and eventually decide to withdraw her support. Also an olympic-themed monster would attack in the middle of all this.

Atom is really socially conscious (the original manga is actually surprisingly political) so he'd be against this from the start.

I'm just imagining the conundrum Goku is having considering one hand how competitive he is but on the other hand he's literally been killed by a virus.

That's why they didn't hold them during a pandemic, they delayed them a year.

I disagree,

A character with strong sense of justice would be against the Olympic committee pandemic or not.

I still remember the disaster they left in Brasil.

Unfortunately, we are still in a pandemic a year later, especially in Japan where less than 13% of the population has been fully vaccinated as of Thursday.

With Germany and Italy opening up, along with the United States, there really is no more excuse not to have the Olympics. Aren't the actual atheletes going to be quarantined and no foreign tourists will be allowed in. Major sporting events are happening all over the globe. As restricted as foreign travel is to Japan, it isn't the Olympics that is going to be the problem.

Japan has spent millions, perhaps billions of Yen on the Olympic games. If they don't have it this year, they are not going to have it at all. The Japanese citizens deserve to have their games, and considering how restrictive the games are going to be and how the rest of the world is having no problem with major sporting events, I see no problem with them having it.

Except even Japan doesn’t want them at this point. The Olympics have always been an economic black hole for the countries that host them, and the Olympic committee is determined to force the them to happen regardless of what is good for Japanese citizens, who again, are rightfully concerned for their own health and safety no matter which other countries are open or not.

Those are three countries. 205 countries are planning to compete at the Olympics, and only 22 have over half of their residents fully vaccinated. (Germany, Italy, and even the United States haven't yet.)

Teams are isolated, but not quarantined until a member test positive. So it's a bad thing if athletes are quarantined. So far, two teams have been quarantined after members tested positive.

The trickier matter is that the Olympics are also hosting support staff from each delegation. Compounding the issue is that the volunteers will not be fully vaccinated by the time the Olympics start.

No sporting event in the world has as many countries (with varying infection and vaccination rates) and as many athletes participating as the Olympics, by a magnitude. The closest will be Euro 2020 this month with only 24 teams in one sport.

The idea that the "Japanese citizens deserve" these games is odd, given that polls indicate that half or more of the citizens are opposed to holding the Olympics as currently planned.
