So happy for Utada! Happy Pride month. This is so important for LGBTs in Japan because they don't have many representations. |

All Power to Hikaru Utada. All their opponents can take a hike.

Anyway, this is pretty cool - non-binary folks got a pretty high profile representation in Utada. By the way, according to the source, this also happened:
That is, Utada pointed at the teddy plushie in the background and said 'His name is Kuma-chan, and he is gay.'" Last edited by SHD on Sat Jun 26, 2021 11:51 am; edited 1 time in total |

No offense but am I noticed the majority of non-binary people are formerly women (based on public figures)?

That's awesome news! Really happy for them. Someone as well known and received as them coming out has to be a real source of comfort and inspiration for others (especially in Japan) working through their own identities, as well as those not out yet.

Hikaru Utada can be whatever they want to be and they'll still be one of Japan's best music artists and anyone who says otherwise is being a bigot.

The interesting thing about this is that they were actually born and raised in the US. I wonder if that background is why they have both a unique feel to their music and an outspokenness that seems uncommon in Japanese media.

Congrats for coming out, Utada-san! Here's hoping their music career continues to be as good as it's always been.

Huh, Utada seems to be more annoyed by the Ms/Mrs thing than anything about gender, but hey, Mx seems to work I guess. Seeing "they" used to refer to a singular person though always strikes me as very cold and disrespectful funny enough, almost as bad as if it were "it".

Since this has come up multiple times from seemingly well-meaning folks, just a reminder that generally the English pronouns for a non-binary person are the singular They/Them/Their. Obviously folks can approve of different ones for themselves, but to my knowledge Utada hasn't publicly mentioned if they're comfortable or okay with still using She/Her. Obviously it can take some time to readjust what language you use to discuss or refer to a person on the fly, but do keep it in mind since there are already some people trying to be passive aggressive by using strictly feminine pronouns in this thread.
