But also this weekend, Anime Weekend Atlanta posted on Facebook that they do expect to host an in-person event in late October. Combining that with the Thanksgiving weekend Comic-Con announcement, versus the steady cancellation of spring events like Animazement, it seems like we're converging on sometime late summer / early fall as the plausibly safe point for conventions to return.
Which of course puts Otakon (Aug 6-8) right on the knife's edge of a go / no-go decision. |

--I've only gofered for Otakon, I speak for myself-- Otakon's in a bind. You look at their IRS filings and what they've told members and I'm led to believe that if they're put in a situation where they *have* to have a con, they're screwed. Whatever kind of planning is happening behind the scenes for that eventuality, there's nothing up for tables or booths or programming. Their would-be musical guest just announced they're splitting. And no matter where we are with vaccinations then, that doesn't mean that WEWCC or DC government will be down with an event like Otakon happening at normal capacity. And it's being able to have 25,000+ in the building that makes Otakon's math work. And even if Otakon does happen, you have to account for the lasting skittishness among prospective members, guests, vendors. In short, if Otakon has to happen this year, it could potentially be ruinous for Otakorp, at least based on my reading of the situation. |

I remember going to Animazement 3-4 years straight in the mid 2000's back when they were in one of the hotels. I stopped going when they moved into the convention center. So much great cosplay even if most of it was Naruto and Inuyasha (which to be fair was hot at the time). I should go back one day (that or the much closer Charlotte one).
Off topic I wonder if this means the Carowinds NC portion of the park will be closed too if these restrictions are in place? They had planed to re-open in late May last time I checked. |
