So in 1 weekend of unrestricted theatrical distribution it managed to exceed the global theatrical take for films like New Mutants. Not quite the blockbuster take of films that managed to race into theaters pre-shutdown (like Sonic), but still pretty impressive.

The Eight Hundred and My People, My Homeland are now the top 2 films of 2020. They will have the whole top 3 when Legend of Deification keeps climbing. Expected more there. Chinese movies steamrolled 2020 and no one outside their borders cares.

No, no it's not. It's not the article's fault that they chose to release the film in theaters in a pandemic.

But it is the article's fault for extolling global box office sales, something that ANN has never, ever reported on, in the middle of a pandemic. That's what I mean by poor taste.

Thats not right. ANN has been reporting on anime movie releases in Japan throughout the year. Demon Slayer has just been the most successful. Also there are quite a few smaller countries with the pandemic contained enough to allow cinemas to operate.

This is basic entertainment news. Even the Hollywood trades reported on this and some Asian countries are doing fine right now. Germany too is doing ok... enough. Life goes on. Tenet made 18.2 mil over here. About 2,5 times what Dunkirk made. Interstellar made 19.9 mil. Our cinemas would love to show new movies...
Japan isn´t safe enough to host the Olympics. No one is but their cinemas can safely operate with certain safety measures in place. They lost about half a year of revenue and will now make less than usual till this gets solved but they will survive. The US film industry will lose at least a year of revenue and that is if things go well. If.
