HOLY SHIT, HOKUTO NO KEN FINALLY GETTING A LEGAL RELEASE.
That is awesome, it really is. Most people have only known it through the cheap Toei anime, so this kind of love is really good news. |

Hot damn!
If this goes well, and some of the other Golden Age Jump series that were licensed recently succeed... would it be too much to hope for someone to get really ambitious and, say, start talking to Thirdline about Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho? |

Nice!!!
After the slow release for Chainsaw man it's good to know we won't have to wait as long to get a physical copy of Undead Unluck. |

Viz attempted to release HNK before like two decades ago. They didn't get very far. Raijin Comics didn't do fare much better. Lets see if they can actually commit this time.

Fist of the North Star & No. 5 are both extremely shocking licenses, as both had previously been released by Viz long ago. Fist was actually first released back in the early-90s by Viz, but poor sales killed it after only 2 or 3 volumes. The Gutsoon gave Fist a second try in the 00s with the beautiful full-color Master Edition books, but that too failed to sell (much like all of Gutsoon's manga, unfortunately). I've been hoping for Viz to give Fist another chance, if only because it now has a complete, official English translation to work off of with the eOneBook release, which should make it not quite as risky as having to translate from scratch. Also, Viz has already confirmed that Fist will be getting the JoJo treatment, i.e. hardcore books with all of the original color pages form the Shonen Jump run retained.
As for No. 5, that was actually once stated (by either Jason Thompson or Ed Chavez) to be the worst-selling manga in Viz's entire history, and they dropped it after only 2 volumes across 2002 & 2003. That being said, I do understand why Viz is willing to give it a second chance, since Taiyo Matsumoto is now a celebrated & respected mangaka, due to Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong, & Sunny. It's similar to how Junji Ito manga didn't sell back during the 00s, but today it's a hot commodity. I also kept seeing people hope for Kinnikuman getting licensed because of Fist, but the chances of that happening are essentially nil. If anything, I say put your hopes more towards maybe City Hunter being given another chance later on, since Tsukasa Hojo & Tetsuo Hara are co-founders of Coamix, so if Hara's iconic manga sells well enough, then maybe Viz can get Hojo to let them release his iconic manga. |

I'm glad Fist is getting a release, but I do have to wonder how the eOneBook backers feel, their copy is jailed to a separate device(likely to fail at some point) unless they'll choose to double dip...

Interestingly, Viz Media originally intended on releasing an English version of this manga back in 2011, and even had 3 volumes listed. However, they ended up cancelling it for unknown reasons (possibly due to sudden undisclosed licensing issues that prevented them from releasing it). Hopefully, they'll manage to get it released here next year without cancelling it. |

I'm disappointed that Viz still not licensing Saiki K. in English, why Viz still ignores Saiki K.?

It was already released before, you can find the manga for sale online, but some volumes were very expensive, which are now dropping in value like crazy |

The manga's semi-long length (26 volumes) could be what's holding it back. Viz (or another company) might consider licensing it in the future, though. Or they could be in negotiations with Shueisha right now. |

Everyone's fussing over Fist of the North Star, but this brought Yakuza Lover (terrible title) onto my radar and THAT is what I'm excited for.
Viz is billing it as a shojo manga, but it's pretty smutty with a lot of graphic sex, though not quite porn. I'm excited because not a lot of similarly sexy series aimed at women get brought over, and even fewer with couples that treat each other well and make sure to obtain mutual consent. Plus, the sex is quite well-drawn and realistic. So yeah, hype for that one. |

Wow. Never would I have thought that Fist of the North Star would get a physical release in North America without a fresh anime adaptation of the original series in Japan, ala Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Viz seldom takes risks like this, but I applaud them for it. I'd find it funny if they brand it under their Shonen Jump line, but I anticipate it being a Viz Signature release. It's interesting to see them also giving No. 5 another shot. While it sold terribly for Viz back in the day (as Lord Geo alluded to), Taiyo Matsumoto has provenance with the alt manga/graphic novel crowd now, so not terribly surprising to see.
On top of it being longer, comedy manga - especially gag comedies - have a poor track record here in North America, and they're harder (and thus more expensive) to translate because jokes do not always translate well into English. Gintama, Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, School Rumble, Reborn! (yes, I know it turns into an action series later) and Bobobo-Bo Bo-bobo were either cancelled, or not explored further after their trial run (in the case of Bo^7). Heck, I bimagine Excel Saga or Hayate the Combat Butler would've been cancelled as well if it was under a different Japanese parent publisher.
As a reader who enjoys smuttier titles targeted to women like Honey x Honey Drops, Midnight Secretary and Happy Marriage, count me in! |
