Does this take place in the 1500s? I feel like securing a safe and happy childbirth is hardly an unprecedented event in need of divine intervention to accomplish.

It includes "a bright future for your beloved child" so it's pretty clear there's some magic elements involved.

Wow, this is a pretty out-there premise. NisiOisin is usually a great writer, so maybe it'll turn out to be something special, but if it isn't handled well this could very easily devolve into something quite tasteless.

That is not necessarily true:

"Every year in the U.S., nearly 4 million women give birth, the vast majority without anything going amiss for themselves or their babies. But more than 135 expectant and new mothers a day — or more than 50,000 a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — endure dangerous and even life-threatening complications that often leave them wounded, weakened, traumatized, financially devastated, unable to bear more children or searching in vain for answers about what went wrong." (source: https://www.propublica.org/article/severe-complications-for-women-during-childbirth-are-skyrocketing-and-could-often-be-prevented)

It is obviously worse in other parts of the world: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/maternal-mortality.

I read the preview on Bookwalker and if this premise wasn't weird enough already, Miyako is only 15! Nisio is truly something else.

Anyone else think of the movie Juno where the pregnant teen main character learns of a pregnant manga character who kicks ass? NisiOisin just wanted to work with that concept!

Getting a kick that the MC’s name is “Mamamiya” Laughing

When my sister was born there was problems, the doctor had to put his hand up there and drag her out. My mother needed 56 stitches.

I was being slightly facetious in my previous post. (Which I later explained in another post where I speculated, but I deleted that deciding to let it drop. Razz) Since there have been two replies, I should clarify that I wasn't stating there are never complications in childbirth. My own birth actually resulted in complications for my mother, as I hadn't been born after ten months and they had to do a c-section.

I just found the premise odd because of the use of the word "unprecedented"; which implies a safe and happy childbirth never happens.

If I don my serious hat, I expect this series to take place in some sort of dystopia if that's actually the case. That or the participating mothers are probably in a situation where they're desperate to save themselves and(or) their children and this competition is their last resort.

I can officially say that this is, without a doubt, 1 of the most random to WTH-type premises I have ever read about for any book.

Money is the only way to secure a Childs future, and that's hardly magic.
