RWBY Season 1 was already pretty shaky, but going back after the series has already made greater strides in more ambitious and even occasionally nuanced storytelling in Seasons 6 and 7, not to mention the astronomically improved art and animation? Yeah, RWBY's beginnings haven't aged gracefully, and I don't think it's very hard for a more experienced writer to improve on the source, but I still think there's some old-school janky charm to the visuals and writing. Plus it's just a lot more chill compared to the most recent material, and I like chill, chill is good.
Regardless, I'm looking forward to taking a look at this version of the story when I get a chance. |

Same here. Except, even in the early days the action scenes were pretty good.
It's pretty amazing how far they've come in terms of story and character. |

I wouldnt say they've come THAT far. They are still VERY rough when it comes to creating a compelling story or good characters. It's pretty much that only the adults are the "well-written" characters. The main four are abyssmal. As for this manga, I vastly prefer it over the early stuff if only because the characters are consistent. Ruby for one has an actual character established early on. The show didn't do that for her until around V4. |

If I have to live in a world where we can't have nice things, if I had to choose between a RWBY manga that does the action well vs one that does characters well, I'd pick characters every time. Even when the source material struggled to find its footing, the fans always fell back on enjoying character interactions. So on a personal level, I much prefer this much more streamlined version of the story, one with actual arcs, build-up, and payoff. Besides, there's the Shirow RWBY manga to scratch that high-octane itch.

Reading this, I can't help but think, "Is it naive fan wish fullfillment to hope for a RWBY anime to streamline the best and downplay the worst of this interesting yet flawed series?"
I have perhaps been spoiled by the Fruits Basket reboot in that it, to me, has presented the best version of a story near and dear to my heart, even with the occasional misstep of its own. EDIT: Holy cow, I just read some of the "Official Manga" and yeah, it is nigh-incomprehensible for newcomers. Even KNOWING what takes place, it was jarring how confusing everything was. The ethereal quality of the art would work much better with a far more dreamlike, emotion-driven story. Have to agree with the reviewer. I am not a fan of RWBY I just read a couple chapters on a whim on the viz app and I gotta say, the art is what caught my attention. It seems this reviewer cant deal with well executed minimalism. The eye flows from panel to panel with no strain. I comprehend everything that is happening in the sequences and what is not represented my brain fills in. Would love to see an adept animation studio bring these design to life. Instead of you know, the horrible 3D of the original.
