This is the best example that sales != quality.

I mean, it's definitely not a bad series, but, for the life of me, I can't understand why it's this popular.

Yeah...I mean, the anime was very pretty, and I enjoyed it well enough, but I'd definitely file it under bog-standard shounen.

Strictly speaking, a sale means that a person likes something enough to buy a copy of. How much more a person likes that thing beyond that threshold typically doesn't manifest in extra copies. So it can be something that a heck of a lot people find at least 'solid' or above (I personally think that it's a solid series, but I wouldn't go too far beyond that).
That is, sales quantity is more a measure of breadth of appeal than depth. Keep that in mind, as it seems like not everybody on the internet can distinguish breadth from depth.

Anyway, since this topic came up, might as well copy what I wrote last time:
"So, while I do like the series, it's probably fair to point out that KnY's the beneficiary of a perfect storm. It's a solid series of a genre/demographic combination that typically has one of, if not the, broadest appeal. The anime adaptation was an amazing job by the studio. The quality over time graph for the series generally goes upward (so the anime covered what was basically the roughest part of the series). Said adaptation was late enough in the series/the series was relatively short enough such that the end was in sight (remember, when the anime started, we were already several months into the last arc) and that the predicted total investment needed for the series isn't off-putting (relative to some other predecessors in the genre).
Unlike some people though, I don't say that to slight the croc's work. I enjoyed the series. I can see how plenty of people can also find it enjoying. The odd part to me would be the remarks by some other mangaka about how KnY did a great job bringing in new people to the world of manga reading. But that's more a function of me being already into this hobby enough that I can't remember what it was like outside of this world Razz (but seriously, great job by Gotouge-sensei on that part)"

Yeah, I could see it having a lot of potential for crossover appeal. It's solid, it has great art design, and the story has a strong fundamental hook right from the start. I think it can be difficult for those of us who have seen this same basic series model many times before to remember that there will always be people who haven't, and that each new generation of fans is going to have their own tentpole shounen franchises.

(Zenitsu is still terrible though.)

This is what only a single episode can do. Just throw some special effects on the screen for a few seconds and Profit.
