This might be the most Makoto Shinkai headline/story I have ever read.

To be fair, the clouds are pretty amazing. I can't imagine how upset this must've made him. Gonna state it again if you don't care about dubs, you can buy the JP blu-ray right now and some places will ship it to most countries - it has subs. The collectors edition is pretty amazing.

Is he trying to say the clouds are missing from the theatrical release, but were added in the DVD/BD release? That would make the most sense, but the wording seems to indicate the opposite.

As an artist, it turns my face blue whenever I "finish" an artwork and then realize one of the layers was accidentally left off, causing some subtle part of the piece to look wrong. It happens to everyone. I know pixiv artists I follow will quietly edit artwork after submitting them, sometimes so quickly that it's obvious the work had already been done, but they submitted the wrong WIP version.

Did anyone even notice the missing clouds until he pointed them out?

No, and you can argue that it was artistic license to not show them in that shot. But I don't know any artist who wouldn't react the same way he did in the theater. I certainly would. You want everything to be as intended.

"You'll have to buy the Blu Ray to see the clouds I intentionally left off. Please buy the Blu Ray."
Pretty much all I gathered from this.

Haha, I wouldn't have been aware without him pointing it out, but the difference is pretty obvious between those screenshots.
I certainly look forward to revisiting this film; I had questions about the story's messages after my theater showing, and I had meant to go see it a second time.

I kind of wish he was actually dirty like this, then he would have put a new post-credits scene on the Your Name BD. Biggest sales boost
