Yeah, the show is kind of amusing, but the whole threat of rape or maybe just some sexual assault is entirely glossed over, and if it was ever an issue is completely forgiven by the end of episode 4. Huh? I don't think I want to be friends with someone like that, regardless of how much they apologize. I certainly would not make some great effort to renew a friendship with them.

My favorite part was the Touch reference to Minami in episode 2. I am always a sucker for Adachi Mitsuru references.

I can buy Pansy and Joro willing to call it water under the bridge since Sun-chan didn't follow up on it. Pansy doesn't seem like the type to hold grudges over a threat, and Joro certainly isn't a saint of any kind himself and cares a lot about his friendship with him. I do think it's a stretch for Himawari and Cosmos to forgive and forget about it but I can suspend my disbelief for it.
I think one aspect of this show that I hope doesn't go unnoticed is the comedy, right up there with Cautious Hero as some of the best of the season. Episodes 2 and 3 toned it down in favor of the effectively ugly drama but the premiere was gut-bustingly hilarious and today's episode was a return to form. You can tell the seiyuu are having a lot of fun with their performances, Cosmos and Joro especially.

Quote: | Jōro will continue to be disturbed by benches for at least three episodes. |
Spoilers but his bench woes don't end there
Quote: | Sun-chan confesses to Jōro (no, not like that) |
God, I know a bunch of people reading the series wanted the twist to be that Sun likes Joro. Not because of like, My Sexy Yaoiz or anything, but just because that would be a massive twist (and tbh the series makes hints towards it to lead you into assuming it'll go in that direction)
Quote: | Jōro's bad personality reveal and ostracization was orchestrated by Jōro as petty revenge because some girl in middle school liked him instead of Sun-chan |
You mean orchestrated by Sun-Chan
Anyway, I had no clue that was what Joro means. Makes a lot of sense now.
The book & flower notes are really useful! great idea doing that; sometimes the references are a bit beyond me, so while I recognise they mean something, I don't know enough about it to know what (i.e. I have never heard of Obbell and the Elephant before)
The series is a bit weird, it's sort of hard to tell what it's intention is, because the big drama resolves so fast... But, the anime is fun, and the voice acting is good. I really loved Himawari and Cosmos' nervous voices when talking to Sun-chan.

You're also likely not a two-faced "nice guy" like Jouro. And more generally, none of the characters here are especially good people. Jerks kind of have to take what friends they can get, and that generally amounts to glossing over their friends' problematic aspects while they do the same.
Anyway, this show's pretty entertaining so far. If nothing else it's a significant change of pace from the typical anime romcom fare.

I am really this show so far. Joro has SOME decent qualities but for the most part its buried under a mountain of s**t. He's like reverse Hachiman. I like his dynamic with Pansy and how she just calls him out for being an ass and manipulative. My theory is that she is trying to expose who he is as a person to everybody, in order to make him a better person, but I could be wrong. Will be fun to find out though.
And is it just me, or does it look like Sun might get with Himawari while Joro (currently) has Pansy and Cosmo on his side of the romance? Will be interesting to see how school newspaper girl messes with him next episode.

They toned down Joro's comeuppance from what I remember. I recall Sun-chan dumping him in the bathroom all beat up, his shoes being filled with tacks, guys regularly beating the **** out of him or otherwise bullying him.
That's perhaps my only criticism of this adaptation. If you're going to have a show about everyone having a dark side, don't lighten it to just a mild nuisance.

I'm fine with this particular case actually. If the bullying got too brutal, there'd be significantly more room to sympathize with him when it's obvious he dug himself into this hole (albeit with Sun-chan's help). If people were trying to inflict bodily harm to him, you can easily make the argument of him having the moral high ground.

I think you are referring to the manga adaptation of this series, which controversially double up on the bullying part and somehow made Jōro a lap dog for Sun-chan. That is never the case in the original novel, which by the way the LN author himself is also responsible for the series composition of the anime adaptation. In the original novel, the bullying has never went THAT far, and he also toned down some controversial elements in episode 4 (you think they let it go that easily? Of course not, some nasty things happened before they went happy go lucky again) and likely episode 5. We should never assume the manga is the faithful representation to the original work (just ask goblin slayer)
I actually think the author is doing a great job to adapting his own series as he trimmed down lots of plot points that might rub people the wrong way, and yes, Jōro and Pansy will also grow and mature considerably as series goes on, but I will stop there.
Based on opening, it seems this one cour show is aim to adapt the first 5 novel volumes, so yeah, this will be pretty fast-paced to say the least, but since the original author is helming the series composition, and so far he is doing great to know which part should be cut or improved, I will be cautiously optimistic (I mean, in the end, this show is a romantic comedy and is never that heavy on plot)
Last but not least, shout out to Lynzee, holy molly, that is some considerable dedication putting forth to the episode review! Great job!!

Good to know about the bullying, the one in the manga made me associate this way too much with fapnote.

Conversely, when it's too childish, it's hard to take it seriously as any sort of karmic punishment for personal foibles. And heaven forbid we sympathize with a protagonist who despite all flaws, suffers worse than he deserves, especially after it's revealed to be the work of an equally duplicitous and far less noble-intentioned friend.
Him having the moral high ground is kind of the point. Joro was clearly putting up with three episodes of insanity in order to help each of his friends' wishes despite all his selfish rationalizations to the contrary. That's why Pansy sides with him over the others and why Sun-chan is the arc villain that ultimately loses.

As much as I like parody, it sounds like the show is just a case of "horrible people being horrible to each others", which I get the point is for them to grow up... but that still require spending time with them being horrible : (
Any relation to "Gamers!"? Reading the summary of the episode reminded me of it for some reason. Can't find any so it's probably just a wrong hunch.

Having been loving this one since the beginning but I think people are buying too much into the "Joro=scum" setup because you may notice that when asked direct questions, he gives truthful answers just not necessarily complete ones. His only "plan" is to get on girl's good sides and isn't engaging in planning and executing full manipulation and deception like Sun-chan is.
Joro is honest with his feelings but just doesn't communicate them unless pressed sufficiently. The really scary planner and manipulator is Sumeriko but I think what I mentioned about Joro is what she loves about him and intends to force those qualities into the open. I think her plan is to get him to give up the "good-guy act" and be real with people, to be the good guy he is inside.
P.S. Good for you Lynzee for noticing the use of the books and thier relation to the action and situation. Was wondering if people would pick up on that...

I think my biggest complaint with ep 4 is how predictable everything was. The show has been much more fun when its twists and jokes are surprising or at least suitably messed up. All the making up in this ep happened in basically the most expected and straightforward ways possible, including the "twist" where Joro is still fantasizing about being a harem protagonist at the end.
Hopefully this is just setup for the next melodramatic arc, though another round of "MC gets bullied by his classmates because he's just so misunderstood" sounds a bit unappealing. Still the show has been the best new one of the season so far, so I'm hoping it exceeds expectations!
