Episode 1
I was one of the people that felt uncomfortable with Kantai Collection, that despite its setting it was essentially girls who represented the warships that Japan used in WWII and did not too nice things with. The uncomfortable feeling of trying to revise the terrible things Japan did through a cute and heroic lens. So I am not entirely sure what to think of Azur Lane. I have seen art of it in places, so were a bit interested in what it may do. And I think from the first episode it looked like the good guys are based on Western ships, with I think the bad guys had a Japanese flair. I still feel like I did not process a lot of what I just watched, everything a bit much. So who knows going forward? |

Even if you are able to ignore the Japanese WWII war aims, the fact remains that almost all of these ships came to violent ends before the end of the war. It is difficult to get interested in one of the "girls" in the anime and then find, shot to pieces, bombed until sunk, or torpedoed. Of the very few still afloat at the end, one (Takao) was simply towed out to sea and shot at until it sank. I think a couple lasted long enough to be targets at Bikini. No happy endings. |

Another target audience for this show is anyone who plays the Azur Lane mobile game. There were so many girls shown in the first episode and I kept thinking to myself "yes, I have her in-game but not the other girl in-game", and so on.
Having them animated on the big screen certainly could be used as a marketing tool for the mobile game. (And it's kinda fun too.) |

I have played Azur Lane a bit and I find this show kinda cool. It's cool to see characters that I already know through the game or even used as part of my roster. Laffey was my starter ship, secretary and part of my A-team so I like it whenever she's on screen. Prinz Eugen was probably my most powerful ship and she's sexy so I like whenever she's on screen. Belfast was also one of my best ships so I like it whenever she's on screen. I have also seen a lot of these Azur Lane characters in uhh... other.... places... so it's cool whenever a character I recognize is on screen.
The action is kinda cool. I don't have any emotional attachment to these battles, but I like the aesthetics and all the cool shit like launching fighter planes into a katana to power it up. And the soundtrack seems pretty epic. All in all it seems like decent fun. Maybe just to see some Laffey kuudere goodness. Or to see Prinz Eugen going "Hmm..." with her finger on her lips. |
