I pretty much expected we wouldn't get the new movie until 2020 but I'm glad they're finally going forward with this and that we got a key visual of the new art style. The new art style doesn't seem too radically different from season three in spite of Tadano's involvement although it looks a little less overtly Precureish as the season three style. It's interesting they're calling it the Eternal movies instead of Dream like the name of the manga arc. I would think Eternal would make more sense for the Stars arc where Usagi is primarily in her Eternal form when she doesn't get her Eternal powers until the end of the Dream arc in the manga. I'm excited we have a new writer and that this time they're going with a writer that has more experience in anime than just their usual in-house Precure writer. I was worried about how they're going to cram all of the Dream arc into two films and I still have my concerns but this give me a little more hope that Toei is taking these movies seriously. I hope we'll see a full length trailer soon to see what the animation looks like in movement.

An update, yay~. I was a little 'eh' on the staff, just because I was worried they were 90s pandering again, but I actually have a lot more faith in this with Kazuyuki Fudeyasu on the scripts.
And that is pretty artwork. It's sad to not be able to appreciate seeing Kazuko Tadano's work again, just because of the stink and negativity that has been around since Crystal's announcement. But I do like how the images look so far, it feels fresh enough and like a throwback to classic while representing Crystal. Looking forward to the movie! 2020 is a great year for Sailor Moon, it seems~. I hope we can get more PGSM material next! |

I figured we'd get news on Usagi's birthday but looking at this, oh my God, the character designs are wonderful, I'm glad we got a new writer as Yuji Kobayashi has proven time and again he can't do good characterization and storytelling/adapting for peanuts, and Kazuko Tadano has delivered once again, yes, yes, yes!!
The only problem I have is...why is "Eternal" in the title, considering the Sailors don't get their Eternal forms until the end of the Dream arc? Either way, I don't care, I'm so excited and can't wait until 2020!

Im pretty sure the next big anime title arcsysworks will work on is either Jojo Bizarre Adventure or Sailor Moon seeing how Sailor Moon had a 2d fighting game on the PS1 years ago. |

It's actually relevant. Sailor Moon Crystal was titled as such because it was all about her and Chibiusa's crystals. The entire plot was centered around Usagi coming into power with her crystal, discovering she possessed its power and that it was not borrowed, how the villains and Tuxedo Mask were searching for it, and how Chibiusa basically accidentally kidnapped her mother's crystal in the future, then harnessing her own crystal power. As the show progressed to season 3, it wasn't so much about the crystal anymore. In fact, I loathe that they even named season 3 "Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3." It should have been something like Sailor Moon Talisman or Sailor Moon Crystal Hearts or something of that nature. Lastly, in the end of the manga, Sailor Moon becomes Eternal Sailor Moon. Implying that is her final form. This is where the new season's title stems from. It's not random or to segregate itself from Crystal's seasons. It's just a relevant title for the next arc. I hope they call the final movie Sailor Moon Eternal Stars, and not "Season 2" or something similar. In fact, they could have named this movie Sailor Moon Dream or Dream Arc, and the final movie Eternal, but I guess they chose not to. |

I am going to keep very low expectations for this. If they just are doing an straight up manga adaption of the Dream arc, it is going to just be more of the disappointing same, no matter how much they upgrade the visuals. The fact that original manga just isn't really good for much beyond being a plot and character outline to be mined from and crafted into better forms is always going to be crux of the problem here.
So unless they are willing to start reinterpreting things, it not going to be a better version of the story than SuperS. (And no, manga fans. I am not interested in arguing with you about the matter again. I just want to say my piece here.) |
