As far as the movie goes, it's a painfully stripped down version of the story, focusing almost exclusively on Kamui, Fuuma, Kotori, Hinoto, & Kanoe. It gives almost no insight into the other characters...in fact...

spoiler[My two favourite characters, Subaru & Seishirou, are killed off in the first five minutes...ah well, at least it's also the best fight of the movie.

Also, Kakyou's character, since I guess there was no room for a comatose Dreamgazer, was replaced with a character whose specialty was watercasting. If I remember right, Yuuto (the...usual watercaster) was just limited to his bladed whip-thingy.]

All in all, I thought the movie was okay, but was ultimately hurt by the fact that even a stripped down version of X won't fit in the frame of time a typical feature film runs (more than fourteen main characters, plus a fairly intricate story in itself...yeah...).

ANYWAY, as for the series, it's one of my all-time favourites, so that should say something about my attitude towards it. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop Sadly, I've only seen it all the way through once (I'll get about nine episodes in and get distracted by something else...ech...), but I found the way the story was told was brilliant; each episode seems to focus on one particular character, while still forwarding the overall plot, so that it's almost like most of the episodes are told each from an individual character's perspective.

I just finished viewing this series, and I have one word "wow." This show is SO amazing. I love the characters (and their development), the story, the animation, the music, everything. I haven't seen the orginal movie yet, and I've only heard bad things about it, but I'm just wondering if anyone out there could tell me about the movie. Is it worth buying? Or will the series do?

I just finished watching the series last week. It was really good.

The movie is an alternate telling of the same story. It follows the story of the TV show somewhat, the animation is excellent, and the ending is different. If you liked the tv show, you'll probably like the movie--I did.

I think most people disliked the movie because they had read the manga and thought the movie didn't live up to that or they hadn't read the manga and felt the movie was too fast paced and difficult to follow (there isn't much time for character development in such a short amount of time compared to manga or a tv series).

I think after watching the TV show, you'd get more out of the movie than either those familiar with the manga or those with no familiarity at all. The animation in the movie makes it worth watching just for the fluid action scenes in my opinion. The different ending was interesting too. (I believe the actual story, which began in manga form, hasn't even been finished yet, so the movie ending or TV ending isn't really the official ending of the story).

I agree with littlegreenwolf. As much as I ramble about the Kenshin manga, I must tip my hat to X as my all-time favourite. The artwork, story, characters...everything is just so extremely well done...too bad I've only been able to read through volume 7. Embarassed

You can get Kenshin at Viz or Amazon. It's only 7.95, but only 3 volumes will be released by end of January.

I don't know about X. Haven't seen it, yet, but I'm kind of interested now. Very Happy

X TV is just...great! I love it. One of my top fav anime of all time too. And yes the manga is awesome! You can purchase them at any place they sell manga. Barnes N' Noble, Waldenbooks or any anime online store. I'll give credit to the X movie for it's art, but I was very disappointed with the story, of course. But I recommend X TV (and the manga) to everybody.

The manga has 1999 as part of the title. I found it at Amazon for $10.

X/1999, Vol. 1, Prelude

Volume 13 has not been published yet.

Here's a good list of X stuff at Amazon.

I concur with the X worship around here. It's such a beautiful series, and how could it not be when you look at the star-studded cast of creators.

First, it's based on a CLAMP manga. That, in of itself, is a guarantee of popularity. Then, let's take it to Studio Madhouse for animation. Not the trendy Gonzo, erratic Gainax, or controlling I.G, but Madhouse. Finally, we'll get Mr. Stylish himself, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, to direct it.

Yep, formula for perfection in my book. X needs to be on TV, yesterday.

Too bad there's so many theological overtones. And it is a startlingly violent series. But it is TOO pretty.

I hate to be the only downer here at this love fest, but I'm curious for opinions....

I've watched only the first vol so far of X, and although it wasn't bad by any means, it didn't really suck me in. The animation was very good and all, but I found the main three characters (the main guy, plus the brother-sisterpair) sort of melodramatic, and the main character was wayyyy too moody, and didn't show any signs (in the 1st 4 episodes) of other different future possibilities emerging. I'm assuming this would be classified as a shoujo anime, so is this sort of "high-melodrama" feeling (and I don't mean that as an insult, simply a type of drama) the way the rest of the show goes? My wife sort of liked the show some, and I'm curious about the tone of the rest of the series, as the first volume wasn't really my cup of tea.

I figure you guys all love the show so much and have seen it all, you might be able to enlighten me a bit.

Sadly, the version I have is an HK bootleg box set, so please enlighten me...is episode five on the first disc? If not, at least try the series up to that point. If I recall correctly, that's when the overall story is explained and begins to go into motion, and it's also when some of the other characters aside from Kamui, Fuuma, & Kotori begin to get some screen time.

Truth be told, I'm not the world's biggest fan of those three either, until...spoiler[Fuuma turns evil and Kotori gets crucified. Truth be told, though, Kotori's actually a little more likable in what I've read of the manga.] However, most of the other main characters, namely Sorata, Arashi, Karen, Hinoto, Kanoe, Yuuto, Satsuki, Kakyou, Subaru, & Seishirou ended up making the show all the more appealing. Very Happy

Nope, it's still running, I just said that because since the manga is still running, and hasn't ended yet, it's going to end differently. The movie and the tv series both have made up endings because both were made before the manga was finished. *movie made in 1997, tv in 2001*. The manga has gone on for 10 years now, and hasn't lost popularity, and now seems to be coming to an end. *the most recent chapter was about 6 months ago, and CLAMP hasn't touched it since starting Tsubasa*, and that last chapter was 0.0 Looked like one of the two main guys was gonna die. Anyway, I'm ranting here, sorry.

As to Steve, yeah, it's only the first, and X is an amazing series. The story completely unfolds before your eyes, and beleive the hype you hear about it, it's one of the best out there. And yeah, it's a shoujo, but no ones does shoujo that appeals to everyone better the CLAMP.

PS. LONG LIVE SORASHI! THE BEST COUPLE IN ANIME! ... oh wait... is that Sorata and Arashi, or Syaoran and Sakura who make the best couple... damn CLAMP, they're too good.

Yeah, the manga isn't finished. They just released volume 18 in Japan...then, about 6 months ago or so, CLAMP went on an extended leave of the monthly installments. (at a double cliffhanger!!) So there's no manga ending yet. But CLAMP has stated that the manga ending will be different from both the TV series and movie, or so I've heard.
I think the English vol. 12 just got released...but I know of two sites where you can read fan-translations:
http://www.jahannam.net/ for vols. 1-16, and http://tsuriai.net/X/X_Frame.htm for parts of vol. 17-18 (mostly summarized).

Personally, I don't think the story of X picks up until...THE CHOICE. Once you've seen that part, everything kinda clicks into place, and any unlikeable stuff in the beginning is redeemed. Personally, I kinda like the character changes post-choice.
I like Subaru soooo much. The only problem is, reading X has spoiled Tokyo Babylon for me now. Crying or Very sad
