As with all reviews and ratings, yes they are personal taste. That said having seen the previous incarnations and crossovers defintely helps you to appreciate just how far the franchise came with this iteration. The previous versions were a bit of a mess in their own rights. I think this might have an influence on some opinions while for others it's likely that it was something different in our current anime climate. |

Top 5 would be Fate/Apocrypha, Goblin Slayer, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, SAO Alicization, and Zombie Land Saga. Honorable mentions would be Angels of Death, Darling in the Franxx, and Gegege no Kitaro.
Magical Girl Site was a more hopeful story since while it did start with a suicidal protagonist that was getting bullied and beaten the story rewarded her for trusting other people. Aya became friends with the other magical girls and while the story was brutal at times it had an underlying theme of perseverance. The only character close to Aya that even died in Magical Girl Site did so in a heroic manner while saving the lives of other people. Magical Girl Site does have a grimdark story but the show was more optimistic than what was seen in the first episode.] |

I can't say I was too surprised to see MHA on top this year (probably won't be the last either) but I think this year that it was perhaps the most earned, even if I didn't put it in my own top 5. I was a little surprised to see Bunny Girl so high at 6th. I thought it was good and one of the better shows of this season, but I didn't expect it to be the highest ranked fall show in the megapoll.
This year also had the most winter shows in the top 5 of the megapoll since the start of the feature in 2014, with 3 out of the top 5 being from the winter. (Other years - 2014: 1, 2015: 2 if you include the second half of UBW, 2016: 1, 2017: 1) So much for recency bias. Speaking of winter shows, this year is also the first year that KyoAni has had a show in the top 5 of the megapoll (though it came close last year with Dragon Maid). Looking at other studios, Bones has been the most consistent and frequent, with at least one show in the top 5 every year and 2 in 2016. This year marks the return of Madhouse to the top 5 after missing out the past two years when they had taken 2 of the top 5 spots in 2014 and 2015 - and high ones at that with 1st and 3rd, and 1st and 2nd. Those missed years weren't surprising, given the talent that has left Madhouse in the past few years for other studios, like 2016 top anime Yuri on Ice's MAPPA. Studio Wit keeps a spot in the top 5 for the second year in a row with Attack on Titan, though Ancient Magus Bride couldn't hold onto its top 5 spot this year. Though to be fair, only one 2 cours Fall-Winter series has ever gotten into the top 5 for both years (namely, Ufotable's UBW). Other studios to get a top 5 show include Kinema Citrus (Made in Abyss), White Fox (Re:Zero), A-1 (Erased), Studio Deen (Konosuba 2), Pierrot (the first season of Tokyo Ghoul), J.C. Staff (the first season of Food Wars), and the other newcomer, Science Saru (Devilman Crybaby). I wish Kinema Citrus's work this year had ranked higher than 43rd, which is the lowest any of my top 5 have ranked in the megapoll. |

Shout out to the 62 people who voted for Bang Dream! Girls Band Party! Pico. The shows genuinely hilarious and super creative at times. Also to the 94 who voted for Hakumei & Mikochi. Super niche show but it's my anime of the year.

For Mr's Z and Smith, I'll be a Beckett apologist and suggest that what I think he meant was that Franxx was among shows that are forgettable, which brought nothing new to anime or was otherwise a waste of time so nothing would be lost by their omission. Quoting Shakespear it was a "tale full of sound and fury, signifying nothing".

I'm surprised Violet Evergarden ranked this high in the mega poll. I enjoyed the show too but most of that came from its episodic stuff (The Legendary 10th episode) and its drop-dead gorgeous production values. I didn't care all too much about the overarching plot.
That aside, Jojo and Hinamatsuri needs to rank a bit higher in this list. I'm also extremely saddened that Overlord and After the Rain didn't rank particularly high either. None of their OP & ED themes except for Voracity which got an honorable mention, were even mentioned in the Best Songs section.

@Hiroki not Takuya If he or you or anyone else found it a waste of time, I won’t object. But I think forgettable is belied by the experience of the last 6 months or even this feature and its comment section. Mr. Beckett’s screed was not the work of someone who had forgotten, as much as I would hope that he and others who thought similarly will soon be able to do. While it landed about where I expected in the megapoll, more people voted Franxx in their top 5 than a number of reviewer favorites - including Mr. Beckett’s top choice - and one of my own, so its fans didn’t seem to forget it or look poorly upon it. Really, anyone who told themselves that they or everyone else would forget about it in short order was and perhaps is fooling themselves.

Wow, 3 for 3 picking Devilman Crybaby in that last set of reviews. Even so, think I'm gonna have to pass on this one, because
...yeah, no thanks. Nightmares are bad enough when they happen involuntarily. Nothing too surprising in the mega-poll; it's a measure of un-obscurity, after all. Apparently MHA is now officially more popular than AOT, so that's good. A moment of silence for the voteless duo of Bakutsuri Bar Hunter and Gan Gan Ganko-chan, whatever those are. (Are they hunting bars as in pubs, or bars as in bar exams? Or bears?) |

At first I was annoyed that my favorite show of the year didn't get more votes. However, I changed my perspective with love, and behold, the universe is filled with blessings. I hope everyone here loved Anime as much as I did this year, and let's look forward to an even better 2019!

2018 was a good year for interesting anime TVs/movies. My top-6 looks like this:
6) Hugtto! Precure; Probably the best Precure season I watched so far - sasuga SatoJun, I respect him EVEN MORE now. 5) Bloom into you; I love Yagakimi manga and what troyca had done with its TV adaptation is indeed "complete version of Bloom into you", just like Nakatani said in her interview. 4) Pop Team Epic; 3) Violet Evergarden; 2) Hisomaso. I usually like Okada Mari's works, but what she's done with Hisomaso is beyond words. Superb job, definetly must see in case you missed it (thank you, netflix). 1) March comes in like a lion TV-2. 3-gatsu is my favourite manga and Shaft done a stellar adaptation. It's not top-5 because I wasn't able to exclude anything that I picked. And yeah, I think everyone should know how great Hugtto is - the latest episodes is constant feels train for me... |

The fact that both A Place Further Than the Universe & Violet Evergarden made the top 5 on the poll makes me a very happy panda. Both were in my personal top 5 for 2018 and I voted for them so I am happy they made it so high. I expected A Place Further Than the Universe to do pretty well but I was not sure Violet Evergarden would.
For me my top 5 (including movies) would be: 1. Maquia 2. Devilman Crybaby 3. Violet Evergarden 4. My Hero Academia season 3 5. A Place Further Than the Universe Ancient Magus Bride & Golden Kamuy being the closest runners up. |
