I am a huge supporter of free speech but making books adult only is a matter of decency which varies depending on the local culture. Also The Expression History of Ero-Manga has a cover illustration of a woman licking a tentacle which is something you don't usually see on a medical journal.

Hey hey, don't touch my weird hentai, Japan.
In a storytelling perspective, it might as well be one great literary example of free erotic expressionism. Don't take the free part away by denigrating it and trying to censor it to the public with controversy somehow, it's just a drawing with fictional story (sometimes taken from real life cases, but yeah). Although, in this case, we are talking about something that doesn't really need too much of a graphical exposure imo. |

For my money, I think the Ero-Manga book should probably get some kind of 'adult content' label slapped on it, though I wouldn't go as far as labeling it "harmful" (though I also don't know if this is basically the same as giving a video game an Adult-Only rating vs the more normal Mature rating, where you just flat-out don't sell AO stuff to minors, if at all). The vending machine book sounds pretty benign to me, though, and it seems pretty ludicrous to give that a "harmful" label.

I won't rehash my criticisms of the bill and this designation again, but I'm curious since this is now applied to art & education books like this, if historical art books featuring the The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife and generally Shunga and muesuems that feature them are designated or will be designated harmful with the same restrictions

I had never heard of either book, but the ero-manga one has my interest. Hopefully, the controversy inspires a lot of people to buy them. They seem quite educational (in a true educational sense). The tentacle on the front might be weird, but tentacles are probably one of the most iconic symbols for the evolution of expression in ero-manga, so it's extremely fitting. They COULD publish alternate cover versions if so needed, though.

This is pretty much what I though too. It's understandable that they'd want an adult content warning on a book that has content from material that's 18+(and that cover honestly isn't helping it any), but slapping an adult label on a book for just discussing book vending machines that used to exist? I find it hard to believe that the book "includes many scenes with lewd depictions of sexual acts between men and women," like the government says it does. There's no reason why that would be included in a research book like that. |

What do you except? Even if it's educational, the law is the law. If somebody wants to learn about erotic manga history, they should be eighteen already to care, or found out on the internet.
It is ironic however that a book talking about bypassing censorship got censored. |

This looks to be the start of the Shimoneta timeline.

Considering To Love Ru Darkness and Yosuga no Sora were reviewed and got off scot-free, research books really shouldn't be getting the "harmful for minors" classification.

The article has links to websites where the books are listed. You can also see the ISBN to check availability if the options there aren't useful to you.

I came to see what the hubbub was about the tamest F4U art I’ve ever seen. (Super nice cover, good job F4U) and left sad to hear about more silly double standard laws going into effect.

When Toshokan Sensou was released I thought it's "protecting the right-to-read" premise seemed rather absurd. The armed conflict part of the story still seems absurd, but maybe the Japanese creators were feeling the pressures for censorship even then.

The Japanese government should start building the integrated resorts, so I can gamble in the casinos contained in them instead of acting like tyrants and censoring educational material.
