Yay! I'm hoping this new chapter includes a development on a relationship that I heard doesn't really get a conclusion in the end of the last chapter

Mixed feelings about the way the main series ended. Can live with it but at the same time have wanted Karuho Shiina to continue telling their stories for years to come too.

This first extra chapter released today is about spoiler[Kurumi and Sawako -primarily. I hope she doesn't leave this where she left them at the end of this first instalment either. Again it feels like she has so much more to tell us ...]

Sure. The preview for this May issue of Betsuma has a panel from this chapter embedded too, to visualise the mild spoiler, together with the illustration of the chapter's title page.

http://betsuma.shueisha.co.jp/new/

Recycling bits of what I posted on a different board but keeping it vague too...

The couples are interesting and all the relationships in a broader sense too. From the beginning she sketched all of them with such a keen eye. From inception their story was instilled with her humanity, with her humorous take on "our" interactions.

Ideally, there will be many more special chapters in the future. Enough to bundle them into volumes of their own - which Viz could then translate into English and publish eventually too. Perhaps these specials will find their way into the books for (a) different series as has been done with extra chapters for other stories before and was originally her plan for Kimi ni Todoke.

With the second special announced for fall 2018 especially it will be interesting to see what Viz does with these extra chapters - and the other published extras for the conclusion of the main series as well for that matter. Japanese volume 30 was already published and doesn't - couldn't- include these particular extra chapters but perhaps Viz has that option for their December release....

My Japanese is not the greatest, and haven't had a chance to read some of the latest Kimi no Todoke, but I got a copy of the first special chapter. Major Spoilers (as I understood them, like I said, not great at Japanese, so sorry if I got any details wrong.)

spoiler[Kurumi and Sawako are hanging out together at college, and Kurumi basically bullies Sawako into going to a goukon with her, the reasoning being Kurumi couldn't possibly go alone, and she really wants to get a boyfriend (but I think mostly it was to tease Sawako.) Sawako does tell Kazehaya she's going on the phone, and he seems nervous about the situation, but says okay. At the goukon they end up getting harassed by a creeper, but are saved when Sawako's older brother(?) shows up. It really does say older brother, and he does know Sawako, but as far as I've read, there's never been a mention that she had one, so I'm way weirded out. Anyways, he ends up teasing Kurumi alot, calling her Ume, etc. Kurumi ends up bumping into him again later when he's visiting Sawako I guess, and he questions her about what's her type, ostensibly so he can introduce her to other guys since she said at the goukon she really wanted a boyfriend. In the end he ends up asking Kurumi out. Kind of random chapter, too be honest. Felt like the author just felt the need to pair all her characters off. ]

"Kurumi wants a boyfriend".
This is sooo out of character to what she was like in the main series spoiler[Shuning every advance and confession from boys in high school. she's also still in love with Kazehaya too. This reads to me like Kurumizawa is playing devil's advocate to test Sawako's fidelity ] There was never any sense that Sawako had any siblings at all as it's strongly implied she is an only child, so to suddenly have an "older brother" show up is very bizare. Cousin maybe, but not brother. I hate it when mangaka's pull this shyte. Rolling Eyes

No, Kurumi's actually changed a lot. She's no longer in love with Kazehaya (but sees him as a good friend), and her own view of Sawako has turned around completely. Sawako is her best friend/fated person who saved her from the dark side. Her character development in the series was slow, but it was great!

As for the boyfriend thing, Kurumi has been in college for a while and wants to get past her old life and start anew.

And Sawako IS an only child. The guy shows up is her cousin Eiji Akahoshi, a popular character from Karuho Shiina's other manga, Crazy For You. He was hinted to be Sawako's cousin in the anime's New Year episodes, and the Kimi ni Todoke fanbook has a short crossover chapter where he visits her family after her first date with Kazehaya.

Tbh, his pairing with Kurumi was kind of set up before Kimi ni Todoke. He doesn't get the main female lead in Crazy For You, and at the end of the series it's said he's better suited to a girl who "rants and raves". Kurumi has had that personality from the beginning. This wasn't random.
