Devilman Crybaby is really good and if you are not living in the United States, Violet Evergarden is really great. |

I liked Fate/Apocrypha but that was a licensed show and I haven't really cared for any of their original productions. It is a bit early for doomsday predictions but for all the comments about creative freedom it feels like we will either get westernized hyper violence or we will get Voltron 2.0 (A.I.C.O. Incarnation). I don't require Killing Bites level fanservice but I do like shows that are at least a bit sexy. So far nothing that has been announced for Netflix looks like it is going to deliver that.

@Kadmos1 Yeah, I'm aware that Devilman Crybaby wasn't a true "original". I guess "exclusive" would be the right term.
Anyway, is anyone else looking forward to A.I.C.O -Incarnation- like I am? I see B: The Beginning mentioned frequently when people are talking about upcoming Netflix anime, but haven't seen many people talking about this one. |

I'm definitely down for Netflix working with those studios to make original anime.
What do you mean by calling AICO Incarnation Voltron 2.0? I'm not sure they have much in common beyond that they are both Netflix Originals. As for shows that are at least a bit sexy, I'll first point to Devilman Crybaby like everyone else. It has more uncensored nudity than Killing Bites (or pretty much any TV anime) and actual sex scenes. Beyond that, Netflix also has Kill la Kill - not as an "Original" but still. @G S Palmer I'm looking forward to AICO as well. If anything I've heard and seen more about AICO than B the Beginning. |

Netflix, for people who always thought anime would be better without the Japanese aspect of it.
So what, about 5 - 10 years before the anime industry becomes edgy cartoons for American hipsters? The good news is China has been trying to lure Japanese animators and directors for some time now so maybe they're looking to get serious on the international market. If anime gets pounded into dust by imperialists in the next 10 years it would certainly be nice to have a new rising industry that offers unique animation that is reflective of its culture and not "international" (i.e. American) standards. |

I honestly don't know how to feel about this announcement. On one hand, it'll be good for those studios to get an influx of money from the deep pockets of Netflix. On the other hand, it could prevent those studios from working on new contracts for existing shows. If these newly produced shows prevent Bones from doing MHA season 4 or Wit/IG doing AoT seasons 4, I'll be very upset.
Also we still have yet to really get a scope of just how these Netflix original anime series hold up. The Netflix original brand has gone down quite a bit in quality for non-anime shows. Recently they have been producing a lot of just bad TV, instead of their previous track record which was generally pretty good. I dunno, we'll see how this plays out. Either way, if Netflix tries to put existing anime companies out of business (something I don't see them doing just yet, thank goodness) then I will hate them with all my being. |

If it is like Devilman Crybaby or Bones' upcoming AICO or I.G.'s upcoming B the Beginning, they mean as soon as they are finished making the entire show, it will debut worldwide on Netflix. |

I don't get the nervousness and hesitation from some of the posters in this thread. Aside from the unpopularity of the binge watch model for Japanese tv broadcast shows, Netflix has shown that they know what they are doing. Devilman Crybaby is a great anime, Violet Evergarden is a high quality show and the incoming March shows look solid. Those are very good signs. It is a win-win-win deal as far as I am concerned.
And for those worried about disc releases, Netflix seems willing to let other companies do home releases of their stuff.
If Production I. G and Bones were small studios that would be a worry for me, but they seem large enough to handle multiple shows a season. Also, I imagine that the production schedule for these Netflix shows would be less hectic with bigger budgets. And for high profile shows like MHA and AoT, Production I.G, Wit and Bones would be crazy to abandon those projects because they are a big deal; they probably make a lot of money for them. If in the end the Netflix deal prevents these studios from working on new projects driven by Japanese production committees, there should be other quality studios willing to step in. |

As long as they’re still released to home video, I don’t care.

The overall budgets might not be much bigger, if previous shows are an indication, but the overall schedule will definitely be better, at least according to animators on Twitter. And yes, Bones currently has 4 studios and is more than capable of handling multiple shows at a time, and the studio that is handling AICO is most likely going to simply be "the exclusive Netflix anime" studio. Which would mean there will be almost no impact on the output the rest of the studio has. And Production IG has multiple studios with the exact same kind of set up as well, with B: The Beginning being produced by what is likely to be "The Netflix co-production" studio. So, like you, I don't think there is anything to worry about.
They've also more than proven they are down with "sexy" stuff with a lot of other shows. The shows that I watched when I first started actively watching anime were all on Netflix and just a few off the top of my head were: Eflen Lied, High School of the Dead, Queen's Blade, Heaven's Lost Property, and Desert Punk, among others. There is also a decent bit of fanservice, on both sides, in Seven Deadly Sins. I don't think they care too much about what content it has, as long as it drives viewers. High School of the Dead had extremely high viewership numbers back when Netflix still showed those kinds of numbers, as did Elfen Lied, so I'm sure they know exactly what kind of stuff people want to watch there. There has been quite a lot of variety in the shows they've licensed over the last few years too, with things ranging from mainstream shonen, to slice of life, to seinen action, to basically porn, etc. |

And they have even let companies include their Spanish dubs with those releases which is the best thing to come out of this whole deal since other than Viz's Death Note BDs, we haven't seen a trilingual anime release here since the early-mid 00s and even then, it was rare. Hopefully AoA does the same for the eventual Devilman Crybaby release. |
