Well, that was just for the Adult Swim broadcast, IIRC. The DVDs always had the right OPs and EDs. At least, the ones I own have. The Dragon Ball Z score has always had a complex history, hasn't it? My preference has always been Shunsuke Kikuchi's somewhat dated, but always palpable orchestral score, of which Yamamoto contributed to even back in the old days. It's too bad Yamamoto fell into swiping so blatantly it couldn't be ignored anymore, because his Kai soundtrack was excellent, too, and I'm glad I have a couple of sets with his score still intact. Norihito Sumitomo's later Kai and Super scores just don't measure up to either of them, even if they do have some bright spots. It's still better than the English dub-only music which sullied the name of the franchise with its low hanging fruit 90s guitar/electronica masturbation. To think that there are still people demanding Funimation rehire Faulconer. Ugh. And at least Bandai Ent. knew to replace the Zeta Gundam OP and ED with really good pieces of BGM from the show, even if I would have preferred the original songs. It's not like they replaced them with generic songs/music, they used two of Seagusa's best pieces from the show. It's not great that they had to do it to begin with, but it could have been a lot worse. |

Wasn't there something going on with Castle in the Sky where the original US DVD release had an entirely new soundtrack from the original composer, then it was replaced with the original in later releases?
...Is it just me, or is it riffing on "Bitter Sweet Symphony" too? |

@Gonstead Not your imagination! I also remembered this too, though everyone I know thinks RSG was the original opener. Here is the YT link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMsOlhzPEfY Melissa from Porno Graffiti. Now the alternate closer, maybe this?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9kYnFKzqDM Indelible Sin

Bandai Visual rereleased the the movies with the original mono audio (and English subtitles) a number of years ago. They later released the films with the original audio on blu-ray. All the Anime (Anime Limited) recently released the trilogy on blu-ray in the UK. Though it's not clear from the description, I own the set and can confirm the set contains the original theatrical mono audio and the 1998 rerecorded 5.1 audio. |

Yeah, that one bothered me, too, but the chorus really was plagiarized from Trine Rein's "Just Missed the Train", which Kelly Clarkson also recorded. Still, if NANA ever gets a BD release in Japan, I hope they don't replace that song. As for other anime themes that sound plagiarized to me, as much as I love Panzer World Galient's opening theme by Eurox, the verse is mostly identical to the one from The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". And I think I've mentioned it before, but the first few bars from "Space Brothers no Theme" sound too much like "Busca Vida", a song by Brazillian band Paralamas do Sucesso that happens to be about a guy who used to dream of being an astronaut but ended up becoming a corporate suit instead... just like Mutta from Space Brothers. There's also "Reckless Fire", the opening theme to s-CRY-ed that sounds like Ricky Martin's "She Bangs", but I guess that one is more of an homage, with the same rhythm but a completely different melody. Also, "Angel Voice" from the Macross Dynamite 7 OVA has some bits that remind me of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" rhythm-wise, buts it sounds different enough not to seem like plagiarism to me. |

My all-time favorite total rip-off anime soundtrack remains the one for Mobile Suit Gundam 0083. It's not just full of snatches of stolen music, but entire songs. There are obvious, egregious swipes from the soundtracks of Brainstorm, Darkman, Glory, and (really obscure here) a film called Platoon Leader.
Example: Here is the track "Lillian's Heart Attack" from Brainstorm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_1aGW1275c&index=2&list=PLTg6AEoQT82htW32_WdQVBiSRaq-ZTELA And here is the sequence with the track "Burn Down" from 0083: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ANN5n4OHnc#t=02m52s |

This is probably one of my favourite columns+threads now. So interesting (and funny).
I knew of the Dragon Ball drama due to reading about it a while back but all this other stuff is interesting... Sort of like, a mixture of "where's the fine line between reference/homage and plagiarism?" and "how the hell did they get away with THAT?" That tv tropes page is so great (though many of the video links are dead now) |

It's always been fascinating what music gets through and what music doesn't. I was surprised when all of the Lucky Star cover endings made it to the American release, and more surprised that 2 of the insert songs for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya even got dubbed.

Oh maaaaaaan, I didn't know about that one! No wonder it was removed from Viz's release. When I did this panel at Sakura-Con, I pointed out that I find that these connections often deepen my appreciation of the material and are generally fun to point out, but this one pisses me off. I really liked that song. I'll have to include it next time I do this panel. |

I'm not sure if any Slam Dunk release changed the intro for this, but there's a segment in it that sounds almost directly lifted from Van Halen's "Panama". I noticed this when I watched Superbad for the first time; in the scene where the cops are trashing the police cruiser, I asked myself, "Are they playing the Slam Dunk intro?!".
Fun fact: Mexico got this intro too, completely unchanged. I wonder if any Mexican Van Halen fans caught on? |

Also for DBZ, when FUNi made the 5.1 version of the dub with the Japanese music, they omitted all the vocal insert songs, such as the song that plays when Piccolo dies, and the one when Gohan goes SS2 (Unmei no Hi - Tamashii vs Tamashii). They didn't replace them with anything. There's just silence. Even for the original DB, where they otherwise left the music alone from the beginning, the vocal insert songs were usually replaced with more narration.
Jeremiah Yurk voiced adult Goku in the AB dub of GT. Watson was DB only. There's also the actor for the AB "Big Green" dubs of the movies. That's 6 right there. Bulma also had 6 (Maggie Blue O'Hara, Lalainia Lindbjerg, France Perras, Kristin Nowosad, Leda Davies, and the "Big Green" voice). |

Ahh, that certainly would explain it. My first experience watching the show was either through very early Youtube or an even earlier form of a streaming site, which would mean they would have grabbed what was playing on Adult Swim at the time and used that as their upload until the home release for better quality. Very interesting to hear about that promotional deal. It's certainly something I never knew about at the time since I still wasn't all that internet savvy back then. If there's an article or press release for this available, would be cool to read it.
I know about Melissa being the original OP1. However, there was an upload featuring RSG playing there instead that unfortunately seems to have been taken down. Like I said, I do luckily have a copy saved. The alternate end credits I remember used RSG as the music while overplayed over clips from Melissa. A very distinct memory is the sweeping rocky landscape and shot of Mustang and Co. walking towards the viewer while RSG's guitar plays in the background. Since I'm now aware that it was an Adult Swim thing, the credits probably were shorter than an actual ED. Well, this is one mystery that's been solved for me. Thanks to those I quoted for bringing it forward! |

Really glad to have the thing about Nana cleared up. It drove me crazy because it didn't seem like it could be a licensing issue given that the second ED is by the same artist. And then, the song still manages to sneak in when they go see Trapnest live, but maybe that was an oversight.
It's really unfortunate though, because the change in tone from from a little pain to Starless Night coincides with something of a tone shift in the series.
Don't know how you guys were watching, but I'm pretty sure the Japanese audio track on the US DVD release is still The Beatles' version of I've Got a Feeling. They just weren't able to do a cover for the dub. |

Yes, they even reference my favorite, K-On's utter theft of 70's instrumental "Popcorn" for its "antics" soundtrack which usage always bothered me before I finally figured out what I knew it from... Shriek of the Mutilated by means of internet reviewer the Cinema Snob. Yes, this world of ours is both small and weird. Amusingly, the movie couldn't play a credited song directly because it's copyrighted then he had problems with his video because of the song and both tvtropes links are down because of different copyright strikes. I have the DVD, it still has the track, must be one that got away with it... unlike the one with the girls and tanks and girls singing in tanks...
True...which reminds me, any time "Happy Birthday to You" back in its copyrighted days was sung, it was changed in the dub but always was there in the sub. How does copyright law work again, the one with the best lawyers win? |
