I'd just like to note that both Sex and To-y are fantastic, and it's a shame that they've never been released (legally or in scanlation form) in English. Kamijou's art style is one that was fairly unique in the '80s and early '90s (just by looking at them people usually think they're a lot more modern than they actually are), and To-y in particular had a great influence on how manga today expresses music, singing, etc. It has some of the best concert scenes ever put on page. Sex, on the other hand, is incredibly atmospheric, very movie-like in its composition.
Kamijou's later manga are not all that noteworthy, but To-y and Sex deserve a lot more attention and respect than they get, and I'm very happy for this PV. |

This is old news but I am very glad that ANN finally brought it to light for the rest of the world.
Kamijou-sensei first announced I think back in Feb 29th: https://twitter.com/atsushi19630312/status/836846044990353408
It is strange why it never got scanlated, I sort of understand why it is not legally licensed here but scanlated!? It is a bummer because SEX and TO-Y are great pieces of work. That's why when I was in Japan, I picked up the 5 volumes of the TO-Y 30th Anniversary Edition and 7 volumes of SEX. To add more frosting onto the cake, I got Kamijou-sensei to sign a copy of TO-Y. I hope these newer Editions of SEX & TO-Y will give them a chance to be licensed for the U.S.......but I doubt it..... |

Great to see ANN talks about this !
I have been a fan of Kamijo's masterpiece for twenty years now - we got the first two volumes of SEX (badly edited) in French back in the 90s - and seeing it adapted into an anime has been one of my dreams ever since. I had a blast reading it at the time, as the bulk of licencied titles ran from Dragon Ball and Ranma to Appleseed but pure stylish, atmospheric titles were still pretty rare...
Older semi-classics are rarely systematically translated - especially when the mangaka hasn't made the headlines for a decade or so, and so is unknown to most of the (younger) people you may find on the scanlation scene. That's my guess, at least. But yes, when I see some of the titles which are chosen to be scanlated and which are not, I roll my eyes sometimes. Weird sense of priorities. |

I think the main problem is that To-y is about a very specific time and scene that not a lot of Western manga fans are interested in nowadays - even people who like JPop and idols are rarely familiar with or interested in the '80s Japanese music scene. Personally I do have an interest in all that, and even that aside I think To-y speaks to everyone who was once a teenager and had dreams and/or loved music (it has a fantastic "seishun" feel to it), but in a way I understand why it's a fairly niche title when it comes to scanlations. Younger people probably have difficulties connecting with it. As for Sex, well... I actually don't understand that one, apart from, again, the '80s thing that probably alienates many readers. Plus it's a fairly quirky manga.
Wow, good for you! (But I'm so jealous! )
I've always wanted to get those! But I never found them at a price I could justify to myself, heh. (Never mind the Japanese originals... perhaps if I was in Japan and could spend time digging through used book stores, but on the internet, no chance.) |

I'm laughing at the title. I wonder if I'm allowed to mention this to people. LOL!!

What a crappy article. It's a manga of great influence, huh? WHY?? And what's it about? Simple obvious things to mention so I might actually care about the subject, and only a paragraph that says why another manga might be better.
