I've heard lots about the Berserk manga and how great it is, but there's also an anime. Supposedly they're both excellent. My question is should I just read the manga or watch the anime up till it stops then pick up with the manga? Thanks in advance!

I would say that you would want to read the manga all the way through, because the anime is an adaption of what the manga is, and in a way doesn't have as much details than the manga. The anime is good in way of giving you the feel of the Berserk universe, but there are things at the ending of the anime series that was missing, but can be found in the manga. It's good to watch both but to really get the storyline all right and stuff you at least need the manga.

Also the anime only adapts part of the manga, there is much much more that takes place after the anime ends.

I'd actually suggest both. It's an amazing series, but if you are uncomfortable with graphic violence and sexual content, check out the anime first. The anime has really good animation, cool music, and is overall a really great anime. But it only covers volumes 4 through 13 of a 30+ volume series. You're not even getting half of the story, you really only get the background.

The manga is amazing. Gorgeous artwork and styling, and wonderful characters. And much more in-depth than the anime, probably only because of its length. The anime does an excellent job of representing the series, it just doesn't go as far. There are only 2 major characters missing, but they are not necessary for the story that is told in the anime. Also, Season 2 of the anime is on its way.

And if you end up liking Berserk, check out Claymore. Anime smallmouth

As to why the main character is the way he is, and why we see how the people of the lands behave the way they do also.

Were did you hear that season two was on the way? I first learned about berserk by playing the dreamcast game. I was in a block buster and saw the vhs tape and recognized that it was the same character from the game and tried it out. After watching the anime I got hooked, but had to start reading the manga to find out what happened after the eclipse episode. Never heard of clay more, but I might check it out. I've been buying a lot of anime box sets lately.

Word has it there is a possiblity for it, but production wouldn't start until Miura actually finishes the manga series. Reason being for this is to avoid something like a Fruits Basket ending, and Miura can see his series not have a mediocre ending like the first series.

I would absolutely recomend both. In the event that you really had too choose one of the other, I gues the Manga since the Anime simply doesnt cover the entire story.

I would recomend seeing the Anime and then reading the Manga. The Anime is undoubtedly great. You will certainly enjoy it on its own. It does technically cover the backstory of the Manga, but don't take that to be as negative as it sounds. If you cut off the first and last 3? episodes, it would easilly be an amazing stand alone series. Its main problem however is that it adds a huge twist in the last few episodes which turns what promised to be a conclusive ending into just the begining which leaves you dying for more. At that point i would read the Manga. Only a fraction of it will be repetition.

I had read in interview with Miura on a website where he was talking about production of the second season. I believe it was on thehawks.org, but I may be wrong. It's still really only in pre-production from what I understand, but it is on its way.

As far as what Fighter said, I'm not sure about if it's going to be when he finishes. According to Miura himself, he's only a quarter of the way through the story. Anime cry My poor wallet.....

I'll believe it when I see it. I've also never heard anything like this from reliable sources. If a fansite is the only place that has this.... I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Quarter of the way through the story...we're talking about the japanese manga here? The reason I've never wanted to look into this manga is because I don't want to feel like I did with the anime, again. It was SO good! But I want to see everything that happens!

I'm come to realize manga isn't the best medium for me. The absolute crawl some series come out at is horrible on me Confused

I've heard about him supposedly being only half-way done or less. Wherever he supposedly is, it sounds like he's nowhere near finished. I really don't think Beserk will ever have an ending, it will just stop when the author is no longer capable of drawing it.

Talk about a life's work. I understand wanting to put a lot of effort into it but I'm a perfectionist at heart and NOT finishing is like....ughhhh. It's like clawing your own eyes out to me. I either have to not start or to finish completely.

It's so disheartening because as far as potential goes, this ranks as one of the highest things on my list. Kind of wished I had some friend into anime at the time that made me watch while skipping a couple of episodes so it seemed finished, heh.

It's a fansite that had an INTERVIEW with Kentaro Miura. Those words came out of his mouth, not theirs. They also have Miura's permission to scanlate, etc. Also check out Skullknight.net, as they have interviews and stuff, too. Once I find the actual interview, I'll post the direct link to it, but I don't have time right now.
