I don't get why people are so excited about this movie, I thought it was pointless and pretty bad overall, it was anime original after all...

I completely agree. It completely broke and trivialised the original story, had god knows how many continuity errors, and basically presented time travel as magic and wishes, like Doctor Who or something. Still, it's good that people who want it now have the option... but it's going nowhere near my BD boxset of the original series.
