keijo is literally the most popular sumo anime. I mean it's butt sumo but it's pretty much still just sumo.

Maybe Hinomaru Zumou will have an anime one day (though, to be honest, I found it to be pretty mediocre as far as sport series goes).

This. I was a bit curious how Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro was not mentioned as it was aired relatively recently and is on that rare subject of sumo wrestling.

Pure sumo will never have a chance in popularity in anime for the reasons mentioned and much more. It needs to have some sort of "push" to get itself even an iota of attention. Really, the only way to do it is to make it as unrealistic and ridiculous as possible and have it look like Jojo or something. Ah harimanada for the modern age.

Mediocre??? you don't read Hinomaru Zumou right? or at least didn't read more than 10 chapters, because this manga is one of the best and most intense sport mangas out there, sometimes can be even better than Haikyuu (my favourite manga right now).
The characters are great and very well developed and written, is a very realistic sumo manga that explain everything for who don't know about the sport without being boring, and the art during the fights is fantastic.

I'm not surprised Sumo isn't as big as it once was. Football has dominated the sports arena in Japan and most of Eastern Asia and is the most viewed sport right now.

Hinomaru Zumou needs to be animated. It has a lot of tension. Although, the best sumo wrestlers don't look like actual/stereotypical sumo wrestlers.

Actually the above image demonstrated why younger people in Japan don't want to wear the loincloth (aside from the association with big heavyset guys of course). Even with appealing enough masculine dudes, it still looks like they are wearing a big diaper from the front. Fashionable it is not.

Interesting piece.
Actually I'm also wondering about the lack of Chess anime or manga. I don't think I've seen that tackled yet to my knowledge. We've already seen Shogi, Mahjong, Go and other manga about board games but nothing about Chess.
I want to see one although developing matches around it are probably difficult.

Well, it's stated in-universe why nobody else doesn't want to practice it. Because it looks uncool. Because too many people only look on the surface, they don't see the depth in that discipline.
Sumo wrestlers don't bother that much with their appearance. Once they are in the ring, it's either win or lose.
