My sadness appeared when Asterisk War came out and no american made an Asterix and Obelix reference, and know it's come back by not referencing "Il était une fois... la Vie". It did this same premise thirty years ago, teaching childs from all the world (or maybe just french-speaking territories and Spain. Oh, Japan too it seems! Maybe that's how the author took the idea...?) how the system works with human characters inside the body system and its different parts, and yet no english-speaking person even knows about it. I'm gonna cry on the corner

I know about it (okay I'm french speaking first, but still) also remember the historical version of that show. Was pretty good, loved the "pain motorcycle gang". About the show, wonder if they'll cover subject like apoptosis, that'd be pretty grim.

As a biology major, I personally found this title to be just so damn charming and fun to read!
But I do have one major question, does this entire series take course over the place of a month or something? Because RBC's life span is only about a month, just fyi. That, or we need to get a new main RBC girl. Or just ignore that, we could go with that too, just pretend it takes place in an infinite loop where we don't worry about needing a new main RBC girl, whatever. If Case Closed can have him be a kid through multiple christmases (not to mention physical years running), then whatever, this runs in comic book time too. Also, I love that the platelets are little kindergarteners! Technically, they'd just be fragments of a cell, but that would be really creepy, so making them little children is a good work around for a manga. |

If it makes you feel any better, I was really tempted. I picture them whenever I have to write about Asterisk Wars.  I'm not familiar with the other one, though - I guess it didn't make it down to Maine from Canada.
They don't specify, but I'm going to go with "random anime time frame," if only because I've gotten really attached to RBC.  Also, good to know a biology major approves!

Ditto. It even depicted the feud between NK cells and cytotoxic T cells. However I was a bit disappointed seeing B/plasma cells carrying Y-beams; antibodies should be bullets of long range weapons!

As a practicing biologist, I thought this book was adorable, and I'm totally on board for future volumes. But for anyone looking for actual educational content, be warned that the science is at about a middle-school level, and is occasionally wrong (red blood cells don't really carry nutrients, for one thing). The author also missed a couple of good opportunities to make the science work in service of the storytelling; the bit where [spoiler] hides in Red Blood Cell's cart, for instance, could have been better saved for one of the pathogens that actually do hide inside red blood cells. Recommended nonetheless.

Heh, that's what I had in mind when I was reading the premise and the review. I like Chris Rock though, so Osmosis Jones has a special place in my heart. I also think of the movie (and the TV show) a lot any time I come down with a flu. The movie itself was never meant to be educational though, and while Ozzy and Drix was, it seemed to only do so just enough to get the E/I label. It had a lot of potential, but I guess audiences never really tuned in, just like how no one really cared to see Osmosis Jones so it never made back its budget. |
