The good: Disney gave credit to Studio Ghibli instead of pretending it was one of their own titles, like they've been doing with other Asian films.
Most of the voices are acceptable. It doesn't ignore any of the cultural elements and water it down into something generic like the Princess Mononoke trailer. The bad: The girl playing Chihiro seems a little bit more hyper than her Japanese counterpart. (Like she needs ritalin. Note that it's based on comparing the trailers, since I still haven't seen the film.) The trailer itself seems to deceive the viewer into thinking the film's more fast-paced than it really is. Looks like it's being catered to the Spy Kids crowd. On a side note, do those Japanese letters really translate in to "courage", "loyalty", etc. or is Disney just trying to cover up the fact that it's Japanese? :) |

After hearing Viz @ AX say that Disney did an excellent job translating Sen to Chihiro, I would've been *VERY* suprised if Disney pulled any stunts here.
But ever-doubting GATSU has brought up a good point... so here's a translation the kanji in question: The kanji behind "judgement" reads "ketsu dan", which means "decision" and (imo) "judgement". The kanji behind "courage" reads "yuu ki", which means "courage" or "valor" Next is "loyalty" which reads "chuu sei", which (once again) means "loyalty". Everything seems to be perfect to me. As for the trailer itself, it's .. well.... a typical English trailer, I think. The Japanese trailer focuses on the mystery and the strangeness of the world, while the English is more of an overview of the entire film.. Suprisingly, the trailer doesn't really touch on the parents transformation at all (which the Japanese trailer briefly shows). When the Spirit ~ Stallion of the Cimmeron trailers came out, the first two or three times I saw them, the audience LAUGHED and JEERED at it. (Those who recall the trailers know that there was nothing funny in the trailers themselves). I think, for this, the audience's typical response will be much the same -- there will be genuine interest built from seeing the trailer... BUT at the same time, most people won't care to see that there's actually a story being told. IMO anyway. |

To be fair though, how many movies and tv shows about horses-and talking ones at that-have been made? I mean other than nice animation and the fact that the Native Americans weren't portrayed in a racist fashion(at least from what I saw from the trailer),it didn't look like anything special. Plus it's hard to take country music seriously. :) It'd be nice if the trailer for Spirited Away said, "From the director of Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro" though. |

I laughed at the trailer too because it looked like a stupid movie. However, the horse DID NOT talk. The story was told from the horse's point of view, but he did NOT other than the narration. "Spirit is the latest animated film from DreamWorks. It's a beautiful movie to watch. It's the story of a horse who, based on his experiences in the film is named "Spirit Who Could Not Be Broken". Although the narration in the movie is told from a voice meant to be Spirit's, the animals do not have voices. The animators did a wonderful job of conveying emotion and communication through the characters movements and gestures which tell the story in a way that words just can't. I really liked this movie, but I think it's likely to get drowned out by the other blockbusters around it. If you have kids, I'm sure you'll both enjoy it equally." (That's my friend's review on the movie...I didn't see it...he did.) The English trailer for Spirited Away is pretty darn good. It makes me want to see it, which is the purpose of a trailer  I was kinda hesitant about whether or not I'd want to see it after I watched Jin-Roh and Metropolis.....and didn't like either of them. Those were both movies that people kept saying were so great and I couldn't really find anything good about either. Spirited Away definitely looks good in the trailer!

I'm catching a press screening of Spirited Away this morning at a local theater. They won't let me post a review (Since I'm reviewing it for a local news program) on this site, but I can post comments on this forum. I'll let y'all know how it is.

 I just have one question for ya, Zac. On the AnimeNation news for today, they say it appears as if the American release is mastered off the Japanese home video version of the movie.....with the red tint. Now I didn't notice any red tint on the trailer.....
So, my question is: Did it appear to you that there was red tint throughout the movie? (Of course, anyone who watched the trailer can add in if they thought there was red tint on the trailer.....) |

Okay, I saw it. Dubbed, 35mm, presumably a print that will be eventually playing at a theater near you.
They didn't change a damn thing. I've seen the Japanese version twice, and not a single frame of this film has been edited (save the opening title card, which now reads "Spirited Away" instead of having the subtitled kanji). Yubaba still steals Chihiro's kanji, and she also orders Sake for the house after they release the river god. All Japanese kanji and cultural references are intact. It's basically just the Japanese release, in English. I didn't notice any damned red tint. I don't know where they get off basing their summation of the US Theatrical Release on a quicktime trailer, but the 35mm print is vibrant and beautiful and rich in color. No red tint. I repeat: NO RED TINT. Sheesh. As for the voices, they're incredibly well done. I preferred Yubaba's english voice to her Japanese one. Yeah, Chihiro is a little shrill, but she's a kid, so it works in her favor. Haku's voice is done by the guy who did Tidus in Final Fantasy X and Frye on Futurama. He's a talented voice actor and really pulls it off. I even noticed the Colonel from Metal Gear Solid in there. In fact, the Noh Face - after he's swallowed the frog and is using his voice - in English is the absolute closest I've ever heard to matching a Japanese voice perfectly. The performance is amazing, and sounds exactly like the Japanese. It's a great dub job and rivals Mononoke Hime for the best dub I've ever seen. There are a few added lines. They did this in Mononoke Hime, too. Basically, when they cut away from a character, they might say something extra to clarify. Like, when Chihiro sees Haku fly away as a dragon for the first time, in the Japanese version, she just looks at it and walks away. In the English version, she says "Haku is a dragon?!", which makes it a lot clearer what's going on. Also, at the very end, as the car is driving away, they added some dialogue between Chihiro's father and Chihiro. Just a line or two to wrap everything up. It's a bit less abrupt than the original Japanese. Anyway, that's it. If anyone has any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them. -Zac |

No, they aren't. Anime Nation rstated that it seemed to them that teh Red Tint that was on the R2 DVD would also be in the North American theatrical print. |

I got a region three dvd at otakon that was from hong kong, i believe and i couldn't notice the red tint.
now, the trailer....cookie, japanese-speaker-of, is ghibli pronounced gee-blee like in the trailer, or giblee? And they pronounced hayao as hi-ow. that bothered me. chihiro says haku with out the slightest hint of the name being japanese. but anyway...i hear jon ratzenberger is going to be the voice of the bath house manager. ha hah. ah, just watched cheers today too. well hopefully the dub won't be bad. zac said it was great, right? hopefully he's right. but wait, he's answerman! he has to be right!! |

This is good. It finally seems as though Disney is getting serious about actually releasing this movie and having it find an audience.
And it's also good to read a review of the movie from somebody I actually know, instead of some random guy on AICN saying "DOOD I SAW SPIRITED AWAY AN IT ROCKS!!!" or some poorly-translated article taken from a Japanese newspaper. I am very excited about this movie now. I can tell this because of my nipples. |

I'm glad that the little confidence I had in Disney has been rewarded. Now I'm actually excited about seeing Spirited Away. I think they should borrow the tagline from that one run of orange juice commercials and put it on posters outside of the theaters. "100% un-fooled around with."
As for Spirit of the Cimmaron, what honestly did any of us expect from that movie? It seemed doomed from the start. Perhaps talking horses or horse like beings just isn't something people like to see. Remember "The Last Unicorn"? Even with a soundtrack by the band America, it didn't do well. Too bad, too. That's one of my faves. |

Produced in 1992... or 1993 or somewhere around there, at any rate. It was Rankin-Bass's last serious film, AFAICT.. They also did work on Thundercats, Silverhawks, The Hobbit, Return of the King, Flight of Dragons... probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.. |
