Woah... So I read the actual webpage and well, based on what I was able to understand, they're even allowing individuals below the age of majority as long as they receive the consent of their guardian. Hmm, interesting, very interesting. Of course there's the risk of them encountering some god-awful writers though by then, they'd probably be booted out- hopefully. Then again, you'll never know Confused

I'm not familiar with the concept, but it sounds like it'd result in either very bland stories, or very inconsistent ones.

Pretty much every U.S. TV series is written like that, as well as Marvel movies. Whether it is good or bad depends on your opinion.

Yeah, but there is such a thing as show runners and quality control. Some shows within the last few years like Breaking Bad, True Detective S1, Fargo, Hannibal, Stranger Things, etc. pretty much never had any bad episodes. Now that's not to say there aren't plenty of shows that do go downhill in quality (look where Dexter went) but the practice can work. And let's face it, A-1 Pictures hardly has a perfect batting record when it comes to the writing of their series so I have trouble believing it would significantly damage their writing quality overall. It may not improve but I think at least trying this method is a smart move whether it works or not.

I know I am just pouring oil on the fire, but I would like to know the opinion of the "Pure Anime" folks over at the Henry Goto Interview thread about what this means for the preservation of the "Japaneseness" of anime and its purported Americanization.

Probably not much at all. Regardless of what scripts and stories they make, they are still going to be translated and dubbed into English. This is more of a way to boost the quality in said scripts and stories, which is only beneficial.

Haha, nothing of the sort, do not worry. I was making a playful analogy with the "Pure Film Movement" as showcased in the article "Before anime: animation and the Pure Film Movement in pre-war Japan" by Daisuke Miyao. The discussion starts there: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=4817687#4817687.

This is either them realizing their current situation is god [expletive] awful in terms of writing and scripts and needing some form of new talent or them being arrogant as all hell again and thinking they're good at it and have something to teach. Either way last company that should be trying to pass on this sort of advice in the industry and the project is probably doomed to failure or at best negligible results with a company like Aniplex and Tomohiko Ito in charge of it.

I mean this is a company that I consider woefully neglectful towards quality writing (it potentially gets in the way of streamlining advertising and production and doesn't necessarily boost sales so they don't care is my theory) to the point that it just plugs popular light novel writers or niconico personalities with little experience into the series composer position and where one of it's producers once told a seasoned writer who came to share script ideas with him that "None of this matters as long as the show has cute girls" so for them to suddenly give a damn about writing quality is kind of rich and has me thinking there's some sort of alternative angle here like maybe they figure they can get even cheaper or even free writers to work for them in the future or something and save costs there.

As the Romans used to say "Pecunia non olet".
Nothing is preserved in the face of making money.

It is simpler than that. Aniplex has been lucky to have had some major hits recently (SAO, F/Z), but for every hit they have had many more flops so they are doing exactly what Kyoani already attempts every year, to attract new writers before they get big and shackle them to their company. Because as Kyoani has already proven with Myriad Colors Phantom World, no matter how pretty your animation is (with cute girls to boot), if the writing is not worth its salt, nobody is going to watch and neither buy their overpriced discs.

Basically is get the new talented writers before the others.

Only hope that not turns like the LN contests. More than 50% is lost in another fantasy world.
