Here in Russia is no specific law against against "Pokemon Go".
Just our church decided that it was not permissible and that's it.
When, in the synagogues, I think, for captured Pokémon even given a bottle of wine.
Sokolovsky just wanted to show the public that the law "insult feelings of believers" is a real nonsense (Yes, we have such! Funny, true? If you say to beliver - "There is no God" you can get real 3 years in the jail.). Even in his video on YouTube (not pereinachenny versions of TV news) perfectly clear that he was just standing in the church with a smartphone and does not bother anyone.
Things like that called here "Exponential spanking".
P.S. Court did not care about the fact, that he had the care of the handicapped mother.
As well as the fact that noone of those "offended" belivers still didn't show up.

And finally, the second joke.
To analyze video captured by Sokolovsky assembled task force of four people. (Analysis 3 minute video) Very Happy
And yes. Looks like we dont have murderers, robbers, rapists, etc. on the streets xD
And while this analysis going, he was put in detention center for two months.
WHAT... HOW... and again WHAT they will do with this video (allmost 3 min. video) for 2 months?
Anyone know?

Well... hello from Russia guys. =)

Alright, now...Five-plus years in prison just for playing Pokémon GO in church is simply absurd. They could've simply asked the guy to depart instead.

He's not jailed yet. Final court will be at november 3.
Now he got just 2 months of detention.

"So what are you in for?"
"Murder."
"And you?"
"Playing a video game on my phone in a church."

More accurately, he's been jailed (in detention behind bars) for two months before his trial, but not convicted or sentenced to a formal prison term yet.

Wouldn't the correctional facilities be over crowded if doing anything small, would get you sentenced in prison?

Hi FooBoo! Nice to meet you! Though it is sad having to meet under these circumstances. As a Christian, I find it particularly sad since this flies in the face of our core values.

When it's something like this, everyone starts to blame the government (which is the right thing to do)
but let's say it was a mosque instead of a church, almost everyone wouldn't even consider that it's the countries' stupid fault and immediately start blaming the religion...
I just hope the guy gets out of this asap so he can continue his life.

Russia has always been over assertive or down right crazy when it comes to religion. Although this is stupid it's not surprising. Mad

Could this fall under religious fundamentalism/extremism?

wait 5 years? Are you sure about that?
Could it be the maximum penalty to be five years which doesnt mean he will get 5 years?

Still, really overreacting. As a Christian, I would just ask him politely to stop playing or leave quietly. No need to escalate things.

Try doing this in a mosque or a synagogue here in the West, you'll be screwed just as hard and slapped with antisemitism or something equivalent. In some third world countries you'll just get a bullet to the head instantly. Religious extremes are the core of the problem, not Russia. One can make the exact same statement "no wonder everyone hates USA" for their monthly shootings, political incompetence, and little things like jailing people for having Death Notes or reading Doujins.
